That would get you going, and the exhaust, motor mounts and such should be the same. I don't know what your abilities are as to customizing, but if you have to have , and wait for others to help, it can start to take a long time. Since your looking at a engine and such that are 10 years old, and 150000 miles, you might as well freshen it up so you don't have to do it again a year down the road.$$$$$$$$$$$$$ You can use the computer out of the other Jeep, or they make stand alone computers that are the size of you hand. They are around a $1000. Then if your going that far maybe a painless wire kit. But believe me, it's not painless. I have about 40 hours invested in wiring the Cruiser. Mine was a little more involve with the fuel injection, then the digital dash, and others. But what ever you decide, Figure how much its going to cost, and how long you think it going to take, then double the cost, and triple the time, and if you come out less, consider yourself lucky. Been there, don't that, just my 2 cent worth, Kevin.

I'd like to do a lot of pre-planning and staging of necessary items before I actually begin the work. Trying to eliminate as much down time as possible. But I get your point.

Are the alternate computers going to pass the referee inspection? I think going through the engine would be prudent to make sure it's not gonna die in a year or so. So yes, thats gonna take some time also.

Nick however you look at it to make your Jeep a reliable vehicle and to make it perform as a good offroader it's going to take time and money, time more so than money. If I where you and didn't mind the travel time I would talk to Scott/ Dr Dirty he has a nice big garage with ample room. So it can sit and be worked on instead of trying to do things piece meal

Sorry Nick, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I've spent an hour and a half one time just trying to get a header bolt back in on a 67 fairlane big block. Or on the Cruiser a water fitting leaking. Drain water, change fitting, refill, and sum bi-ch still leaks. As to the money, if it comes out less wonderful. I know that I'am slowing down, but Scotty and I have learned that you want to almost triple your time from experience.

• Not raining on my parade... It's just a horse I know I'm gonna have to beat on some day soon.

So, I would think I want to go in this order:
1.) Acquire new engine/trans
2.) Go through engine/trans and replace or tune up what's needed.
Now begins the POS downtime....
3.) Remove old engine/trans & wiring for engine/trans
4.) Install new engine/trans
5.) Install wiring for engine/trans
Yay...POS works again (God willing)
6.) Wheel it...break it...start over at step 1.

And for the general knowledge of the group...Barb wants me working on the CJ5 & not on the YJ during all of this.

Your steps are wrong. Wheel it...break it... would not start at 1 again because it wouldn't be the engine/trans that would break. It'll be u-joints. :gun:

• Ok, so I've been pre-occupied lately with other stuff. I have been looking at CL Cherokee's for sale. Let me ask this before I go any further...

What is considered "low mileage" for one of these bad boys? Most of what I'm seeing advertised as "low mileage" are over 100k. In Michigan, bodies rot away before reaching 130k in mileage...so I'm not sure what to expect here.

Low mileage means just that. Lees than 30k is what I consider low. But my 4L has over 80k and still runs like a champ. If they are taken care of I suspect they will last well into the 300k range. But this is the crap shoot on CL; unless it's local and you can do a compression check it's buyer beware. Ask lots of questions and see what kind of answers come back.

• The biggest thing I would look for is a running engine in the Jeep, Cherokees are notorious for overheating so look for signs of that.
Any rust and brown shit on the hood, on the top of the radiator and near the overflow tank is a no no. You most definitely do not want an engine that has overheated more than once. So basically what you want is a complete running driving Cherokee, could look like crap as long as it runs good doesn't have blowbly or pukes coolant no pulsing out of the exhaust pipe, cranks at an even speed, doesn't have a ton all over the outside of the engine. Those would be pretty much the big telltale signs
