My frame under the 46 has welds and rivets in it. the welds don't look that pretty. I kinda wonder if they still used rivets at the factory just because they weren't sure if the welds would hold? LOL Assuming it's not someone else that's added the welds later on anyway.

This '75 frame also still has parts of it hot riveted together. Weld and riveted both in most places. Must have been some kind of motto. "Them welds look kinda....eh...put some rivets in there too."

Actually the weld and rivet procedure was around for a long time in the ship building trades. Rivets tend to loosen over time, and the small welds held the part tight so it would not move if the rivet came loose. You will see this process on lots of old car and truck frames, and in some industries like big rig manufacture, they still rivet the frames, but more because the frames are case hardened so welding is not good for the metal. I served on an old WWII tender in the Navy that was completely riveted, no welds. The damn thing was built in 1942 and when out at sea in the 80's, in rough weather you could hear, and sometimes sea the hull plates move ever so slightly. I was always thankful that I am a good swimmer...

those frames are riveted to allow for flex in the frame, one of the reasons those old frames eventually crack. Those hot rivets swage really nice in the frame and are a bitch to get out. Truck frames these days use huck rivets exclusively

Yeah, you will should have the room with links and hydro/air bump stops. I lose a little bit of space with the thickness of the springs over axle and the rubber bump stops I use. It depends a bit on ride height too. The only time I think about it is when driving fast on bumpy dirt roads or in the open desert, which isn't advisable on leaf springs anyway .

What axle/wheel size are you going for?

That is one stout frame.I like the way you kicked it out to put the mounts inside. It would be perfect for 60s and v8 and 40" tires.
You can make it

For the most part this frame is done. I still have a tiny bit of welding to do, and as we progress through the build I'm sure some fish plates will be added here or there, but she is ready for a tub.

Go ahead and laugh. Those blobs hanging down are remnants of tack welds. Or Nick welded that one, I can't remember...
