ACTION ALERT: Doran Dr./ Oddessa Cyn Gate Keeper bypass closed off

The problem is this is PUBLIC LAND to be used and enjoyed by the public. This blockage/closure is restricting access to established public roads and land. Wouldn't you rather work with the party responsible for closing this to reach a solution that benefits everyone? (Plus, if you've been around long enough, you know that your comment is quite far-fetched.)

I've been around long enough to see millions of acres of public lands closed to vehicular use. I've also seen the abuses by the off-road community. I've also seen the good the off-road community can accomplish. Do I want to see another closure? NO. Would I like to see.

BTW Doran is still open if you want to run it build a rig capable and do it.

We'd all like to think that people would respect the signage, but the truth is, there are many who wont. As usual, the few make it bad for the many.

MJR prides itself in educating the off-road community to respect its resources and the reprocussions of not. The major thing that differentiates us from other forums is that we dont just talk about doing stuff, WE DO IT. Im proud to say Im part of MJR, and what we do makes a difference.

And to kartastic, sure it sounds good to say "why don't the off-roaders just not use the illegal routes?" that equates to somebody saying "why don't all people stop committing any crimes, then we wouldn't need jails?".

First, you're not separating bad people who go around bypasses, off of legitimate trails and cause these types of closures from people whom MJR are and associate with. In my example, you're not distinguishing criminals from normal people.

Second, you're overly naive in thinking that everybody will just abide by the rules. As we see time and time again, that just doesn't happen. The MJR trail crew has run into people on CLOSED TRAILS while doing SBNF monitored maintenance work, trying our best to keep trails open in Southern California. When confronted, these people lie, backslide, etc. about their actions. It's pathetic and we work too hard for the 'bad apples' to ruin our fun.

So, like Tam (and others) said, instead of idle suggestions, grab a shovel, get your back ready and come help us move some rocks or build gates when we get the "go-ahead".

Who's to say I haven't. I've attended Congressional Field hearings on Wilderness legislation, I've written letters, faxes and emails, I've picked up a shovel. I've had to explain to the reservation person at Calico that it wasn't our Jeeps driving past the signs when trying to make campsite reservations. I personally have 40+hours with the SBNF AAT program. What else do you want me to do?

I am glad people here on MJR have taken the lead on this. Hopefully something productive comes from it.

The people that want to close our trails don't see bad and good they just see the off-roaders.

Maybe that's why it is so frustrating to me, cause there is a certain segment of our community that doesn't give a damn and is very selfish, cause no matter how much work I put into being a "good" off-roader I will always be lumped in with the selfish few.

There is a beer-swillin', redneck variety of off-roader who treats the trails and people with no respect whatsoever. Every single time I've been to an off-road event in Calico, one of these boneheads needed to be flipped over or winched out of somewhere. A "club" brings the morals and responsibility of the group as a whole. Most of the time, people that disrespect public land are out there on their own.

Personally, I think Calico regional park is doing this all wrong. They want the off-road community out and the random tourist in. They can make a lot of money by catering to the off-road community. I'm willing to bet that at any given time, there are more people in the canyons than in the Ghost Town.

From what I see, no one claims responsible for the Rocks. It's on BLM land and they didn't do it. So it must be a illegal dump. Why don't a group of us get together and clean up this dump, and clear the Trail?

Its good to hear youre involved

I think the issue Ive had with your posts is the negativity. I'll agree that we ARE the community that has (in essence) done this to ourselves. We will always be considered part of this community until we do enough to differentiate ourselves. That may never happen. It doesnt help to point fingers. Ive learned in my lifetime that complaining about something does not make it better. Negative energy is contagious.

My Mom always said "If you dont have something nice to say, dont say anything" It is so true.

Ive had numerous discussions with the folks at the Regional Park Office. And though they havent actually stated that they or Calico placed the rocks, they recognize that they were put there for a purpose. Please respect the barrier until we can get a resolution to this.

On another note. Every Regional Park Ive ever been to was fenced all the way around. :dunno:

Open country rule takes over here......I've seen the rock barriers....move them, go around and go wheelin...no brainer.....
Pour as many rocks as you like to make it over whatever you like without some Jeep Club whinning about making it too easy, do what ya have to .....they can move them out just as easy as you moved them in.....

Very nice words for the folks in Temecula, but I live here in the Desert and we have people dumping Rocks, Cement and ever kind of trash on our trails and back yards all the time. And just like this case no one claims the Dump. Besides what does Parks have to do with this. The Dump is on BLM land not parks. Why don't we talk to the Highway Department as well, it's not one their land either. Talking to someone with no interest in the Problem won't help. The Truth is Parks did an illegal Dump and they will never admit to doing so. You can talk till you are blue in the face. Just to end on a Happy Note: The Rocks are pretty.

It is not a dump. The boulders were strategically placed to close of the trail for a reason. The contacts we are speaking with thru BLM and Calico are working with us to come to a mutual resolution. Once we get that resolution it will be posted up.
