            Crap.

Are there any viable alternatives to the closed trails to get to the ridge or at least past Gatekeeper? Are there any other closures on the backside of this bypass or the ridge? I'd really hate to see Gatekeeper messed up to allow less extreme vehicles through. Anybody have any pics?

Besides gatekeeper, the only way is go up Odessa and come back around.

I sent off an email this afternoon. With a little luck, this might help. Thanks Sarah for getting the info on contacts.

I called and left a detailed message for the field rep inviting him along on a ride along through Doran Scenic Loop. I figured it would be best for them to see what we're talking about, and have an actual idea of why its important.

He had already gone for the day, but the gal that answered the phone assured me hed get the message.

Should we put together another petition?

                        Shadly1;
there wasn't any other closures up on the ridge as of 2 weekends ago and there isn't any other route to get to the ridge other than the trails that were closed off.

                          JeepGal,
I might be heading up to run Doran in 2 weeks. Maybe a schedule event with MJR and the Field Rep might show just how important this access is.

                          Just food for thought

Letter in opposition to the CLOSURE OF ONE HUNDRED YEAR OLD HISTORIC ROUTE IN CALICO,

                            Sent May 23, 2008 **********************************************

                            County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt

RE: County Regional Park / Calico Ghost Town closure of one hundred year old historic route. Calico, California (SEE ATTACHED MAP)

                            Dear Supervisor Mitzelfelt,

I write in opposition to the CLOSURE OF ONE HUNDRED YEAR OLD HISTORIC ROUTE IN CALICO, CA as it would impact the right of use, opportunity to use, and the loss of recreational access.

                            Concerns:
*The County Regional Park has closed a road in the Calico area that restricts access to our recreational trails.
*Specifically the trail is known as the Doran / Odessa Loop.
*According to Discovery Trails and the BLM, this route has been used for over one hundred years.
*Thousands use these trails on a regular basis.
*Off road recreational access is already in eminent danger, do not make this a permenant closure.

                            Issues / Solutions:
*Campers in Doran Canyon crossing over to see Calico Ghost Town, bypassing the guard / fee station.
*Campers in Doran Canyon crossing over to use the bathrooms in the campground.
*OHV users from Calico Ghost Town campground entering Doran Canyon by means of the bypass.
*All of these issues can be fixed by blocking the area near the campground.

I can personally volunteer my time to erect a railroad tie or telephone pole fence.

                            Please consider these serious concerns.

Here's my email to the Supervisor:

                              Honerable Supervisor Mitzelfelt,

I have recently discovered that the SB parks system has closed an access road to a very popular Jeep trail in the Calico Ghost Town area. Doran trail has been there for over 100 years and was an historical route to the mining area in the Calico Mountains. To help preserve this trail, many off road clubs join together to help the BLM clean and maintain this trail and others in the Calico area.

I am sure you are aware of the state law that protects roads from closure if they have been in continous use for the last seven years without due process.

I respectfully request that you direct the SP Parks Department to immeadiatly re open the route and to keep it open.

As a long time High Desert resident and property owner, I want to commend you on the stance you have taken to protect our desert and our way of life. I never thought I would have to ask you to protect us from the county!

Thank you and I wish you victory in the up coming election! I have already voted for you in absentee.

so if they close this and the only way up is the gate keeper than im all for it. this just means the trail will stay good and hard like it should be. im sick of going on trails that have been stacked and cleared so the stockers can make it up with out crying. i do think it is sad that people ruin it for us when they take alternative routes or bypasses. i tried gatekeeper for 2 years until i finally made it. it made the day that much better. look on other forums, and look at what people do when they are on the trail, basically pave it so everyone can go up. hopefully pushing for change on this wont pave gatekeeper, then another trail gets turned into a circus.
