More ARSS: Frame-side UCA Bracket Adjustability Redneckedness (FUBAR)

Okay now for the frame-side UCA (upper control arm) bracketry. I'm gonna keep this part of the build simple, git'r done, you know?

Let's see what we can do with some more old scrap metal.

I made these 3x4 UCA brackets back when I made the brackets for the frame-side LCA mounting and for the truss--about 2 years ago, actually. Underneath the angle-iron guide are four holes, which is fairly conventional for these.

Later on I welded the 2x3 onto the back side of it. It's handy for clamping to the frame when doing mockups, but that's not the main reason for it. Here I'm just opening up the tubing so I can actually put a joint in there.


Here's some more UCA bracketry. I'm gonna post this up in smaller chunks. See if you can figure out where this is going .

No thilly, no panhards, diehards or grandstanding politicians in this rear suspension. Today's bracketry is all about the UCA mounting.

I totally see what you're saying, but no. In the front I do use frame wrap-arounds.

The rear UCAs will be adjustable like the rear LCAs. The fronts no. We'll get to the front another time.

Another clue: those last brackets will be fully boxed after they're welded to the frame rails.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit. Those boxes get welded to the top of the frame rail. For the first few pics they're sort of cantilevered, but that will change.


Jeep has this annoying habit of putting elbows in the frame right where I want to put stuff. Since the vertical space between the body and frame is limited, I saved a precious 3/16 of an inch by making the bottom of the box even with the top of the frame. This means that the top of the frame itself makes up a large part of the bottom of the box. Since I needed to be able to play with the positioning and orientation, I couldn't build the boxes to fit the elbows. These little gussets took the elbow out of the equation so I could have the freedom I needed. Nevertheless, if I were to do it over again I would probably build the boxes complete then weld them to the frame. Building them in-place was a real PITA.


Did this weld from below with barely enough room for the torch at a shallow angle, so I cranked it up to 200A. I could barely see what was going on, but it turned out quite well. That's what a fast, hot TIG weld looks like. I've done worse under far better conditions. Later I got a little smarter and cut the seat stuff out of the way.


Driver-side partially closed with outboard adjuster nut in-place. Boxes are fully welded inside and out.


Side view of mockup. Notice the bolts sticking up. They won't stay that way, but it reminds me that I pushed the design as far as I could forward and outboard. Underneath the bolt is just enough room for a nut with a spacer underneath ( so the nut clears the welds), and below the nut, the 3/8” crossmember end-plates. There is no room for the nut to turn--it must be tightened via the bolt head.
