  • Quick Question about buying a CJ.

Hello I just signed up for this site because it looks like the best info is here and thats what I need. I am about to buy a 78 CJ 7 and I had some questions about it. It has a 350 in it with a full fiberglass body and all. 35" tires and I am not sure on the lift. My question is that the rear axles are chained to the frame is that ok? I mean they are bolted up normally but there is a chain spot welded to the axle then hooked to the frame? Is this normal and if so why. I have never seen this before so I thought I would ask before I buy something thats more work then I want. Thanks!

The chain probably acts as a limiting strap, to keep the axle from drooping too much, which might bind the driveshaft.

I have seen that a few times and that is exactly what it was for. Shouldn't be an issue unless it's to short limiting you flex or to long binding the driveshaft.
        Check out .

my diff is limited to the frame with a strap, same idea as the chain. saves drive shafts as stated above.

How about a wood floor? It would spread out the load a bit. Even better would be a steel plate under the seat.

I have thought about the wood floor but I cant seem to find any pics of it so I know how to put it in there. The Floor is not flat so it would kinda hard to do i think. What kind of wood to use? Regular plywood or partical board? Also with the steel plate I think that might be better because it might be better to mold and make fit good. I will take some pics for you guys today and of the question areas so it ill be easier to give me some advice.
