  • lockers ????

i just got my jeep lifted and less than 24 hours after finishing the lift i got stuck in pond bed (what i thought was a dried up pond bed).

during the process of getting "un stuck" i notice the tires on the right side of my jeep were spinning but the ones on the left were not, to make a long story short i ended up shoveling this heavy stinky black mud for a hour in orber to free my jeep. so as i was driving home i started to think about lockers and now i am sitting here asking you what kind of lockers are ideal for an every day driver with a part time passion for mud ,but are are easy on my wallet.

    what is posi lock???

There are numerous threads on this site with numerous suggestions on what to do about locking your diffs. It all boils down to this; if you wheel "extreme" most of the time (rocks, deep mud) then spend the $$ and get selectable lockers (ARB, OX) and if you just wheel hard every so often and can stand having the diffs locked all the time, even when driving on the street, go with auto lockers (Lockrite, Aussie). The inbetween of these two types is the Detroit style locker, a limited slip type set up. The selectables are the most expensive ($700-$900), the Detroit locker ($400 or so) and the auto type ($200-$300) If you are like alot of us sick bastards, you'll regret not getting the selectable lockers right up front. Spend the money now and you'll only have to spend it once. If you are a Superman with the strength it takes to resist the "urge" then go cheap. BUt you'll be sorry... He heheheheheee.
There are lots of places to price out these parts as well; 4 wheel parts, off road warehouse, Northridge 4x4, just type in "locking differentials" in any search engine and you'll find more info than you can possibly use. If you don't know how to do the installs, get someone who does. This isn't something you can sorta get right.
Hope this helps you make a decision.

yes x4 brett knows his stuff. I personally think the way to go is a selectable locker in front (ARB, OX) and a detroit locker in the rear. you'll never know when your arb will fail you, so then youll have your detroit rear to back you up. having a selectable up front is real nice for a daily driver (handles and turns better)

an ARB will fail you when your half ass installation fails. I ran upper big johnson and aftershock with a sheared center pin (didn't find out till I got 'er home):2:

personally, I'm not that impressed with Brett.

but, who know's. I mean, I've only ran 80% of JV for the last 3 years(that's on 35s)... and I have nowhere near 8" of lift.

so, if you young guys wanna listen to these heros... have at it. :yay: :cactus:

you've run 80% of JV on 35's? ive only done 3 of the 11 or 12 trails? cant remember how many. aftershock, claw hammer, and sledge hammer and those are the easy ones. even set up buggys have trouble on a few of the trails there. or are you talking about the dirt trails? because im sure 35's would be plenty big for the dirt roads and whoopdedoos.

I've run just about all the "non-buggy" trails with the exception of Jack so I can't comment on that one.

Lower Big Johnson is about the easiest stretch of rocks out there. That said I've seen steering, track bar, locker and axle shaft damage on it. It's a good warm up.

Upper Big Johnson is considerably more difficult but doable and fun, ask Erik.

Aftershock is fairly straight forward until the end but plenty of fun can be had. This is a good choice if you've got a few newbies, it won't scare 'em until it's to late to turn around.

Claw hammer is a moderate and damn entertaining trail. Plenty of rocks and some nice ledges. some of the lines arn't obvious. This would be my pick to introduce a friend to the hammers.

Sunbonnet is a long way out and a fairly long trail but a good time. I've only run it once. :dunno:

Sledge is classic JV. it's not a long trail but it's packed full of BIG ROCKS. if you want the most bang for you're buck the first time out this is the trail. sign the log book at the mailbox. 60% chance of body damage.

Wrecking Ball is mentally and physically punishing. Unless things have changed, the last waterfall is winch mandatory. I wouldn't do this one first time out. 90% chance of body damage.

Outer Limits is probably my favorite trail in JV. Plenty of challenging obstacles. Two waterfalls that may be winch mandatory. The trail head is far from the lake bed and the trail isn't short so this one sometimes ends after sundown. 75% chance of body damage.

and to finish up the afternoon I highly suggest checking out the buggies at Back Door. Not suitable for a SWB Jeep but damn entertaining to watch.

                anyway... that's my :2:
                if there's 12 then maybe I've only hit 70%.

Brian doesn't run dirt trails. He's talking about all the hammer trails and yes he does it on 35's.

Fun in the Desert is the end of September. Sign up and come on out! Of course, you have to drive the dirt roads to get to the good stuff...
Come to think of it, that IS the only time I've ever seen Brian on a dirt road:yay:

I run an Aussie locker up front, and absolutely love it. Very little ratcheting around corners, and offroad man, it sure does the trick! 249.00 shipped and like an hour to install, can't beat it!
