Hey guys i have a 91 with an AX15 tranny and i wanna go with an AW4 out of a cheroke, has anyone ever done this kinda swap before, what would i need, and would you recommend any other automatic trasmissions.
Why auto?? As long as the aw4 is out of a jeep with a 4.0 and a np231 it should bolt right up. You'll have to get a radiator with a trans cooler or a external aftermarket cooler, get rid of your clutch and linkage and get auto linkage probably floor mounted. Make sure you get a torque converter. Theres probably alot of stuff I'm forgetting.
the AW4 is an electronically controlled trans. the early AW4 had it own control box and did not use the engine control. It had a piggy back TPS that had a separate reading for the trans than the engine, you should be able to wire this controller in without changing the engine controller.
would there be another tranny other than the aw4 to go with? the reason i wanna go with the auto beacuse my car is a daily driver, and on the trail i want an auto, my ax15 is pretty much shot out at this point anyway.
A 999 3 speed should bolt up also. No over drive though. It's a lot shorter than an AW4 too. That's what I don't like about the AW4 - it's 5" longer than a 5 speed.
Theres a AW4 in the oc recycler for $200 rebuilt with 5000 miles
yea i saw it, but i wanna go with something that will be good on the trail and good for me on the highway, what tranny was that rick? out of what car? thanks allot
The 999? Or the AW4? The 999 is the same thing as a 32RH, used in most all short wheelbase Jeeps from CJ's through the current TJ. The AW4 is out of the Cherokee, hence the length not being a problem in its original application. I think a 700R4 is a little shorter than an AW4, but I can't remember how much. Search the net for "700R4 length" and "AW4 length".
Ok my tranny is makin me scared now, when i go into 4th and 5th and let off the gas i get an increttible rattling the shifter and the cab, also a really not so good sound coming out from the tranny itself. I wanna swap to a 32RH as some of you guys suggested. What do you think would be the best way to go about in getting this tranny? Truly how much work do u think it is, im a nubie need some help fellas. Thanks allot
Look for a low miles on on e-bay or try www.car-part.com. It shouldnt be too much work. Just make sure you get all the kickdown linkage, cooler lines, tranny cooler, trans mount (if different), etc. The only part of this tranny that is controled by the computer is the lock-up converter. You may want to research that some.
the swap is complete fellas, i went with a 999 out of another yj, i had to change my tcase out also to be warned u have to change that if your intrestsed in the swap thanks allot to all the help you guys gave me
