Why auto?? As long as the aw4 is out of a jeep with a 4.0 and a np231 it should bolt right up. You'll have to get a radiator with a trans cooler or a external aftermarket cooler, get rid of your clutch and linkage and get auto linkage probably floor mounted. Make sure you get a torque converter. Theres probably alot of stuff I'm forgetting.

the AW4 is an electronically controlled trans. the early AW4 had it own control box and did not use the engine control. It had a piggy back TPS that had a separate reading for the trans than the engine, you should be able to wire this controller in without changing the engine controller.

Or get the manual switch. or make one...

would there be another tranny other than the aw4 to go with? the reason i wanna go with the auto beacuse my car is a daily driver, and on the trail i want an auto, my ax15 is pretty much shot out at this point anyway.

              A 999 3 speed should bolt up also. No over drive though. It's a lot shorter than an AW4 too. That's what I don't like about the AW4 - it's 5" longer than a 5 speed.

The 999? Or the AW4? The 999 is the same thing as a 32RH, used in most all short wheelbase Jeeps from CJ's through the current TJ. The AW4 is out of the Cherokee, hence the length not being a problem in its original application. I think a 700R4 is a little shorter than an AW4, but I can't remember how much. Search the net for "700R4 length" and "AW4 length".

                    info on a 700R4 swap.

My AX-15 is 24.5 from bell to adapter
My AW4 is 25 from bell to the adapter
999 was 16 ish? (but how long is the adapter? )

the AX15 was avalable in a YJ, the AW4 is only slightly longer, it should work.

Look for a low miles on on e-bay or try www.car-part.com. It shouldnt be too much work. Just make sure you get all the kickdown linkage, cooler lines, tranny cooler, trans mount (if different), etc. The only part of this tranny that is controled by the computer is the lock-up converter. You may want to research that some.
