  • Time to start fixing her up...

So it's came the time in my life to start fixing up my '97 TJ. I get my learners a month from today, and want to have it on the road before I get my license (Feb. 09...would be Jan. but I have to pass the driving class at school first).

I've put about 300 miles on it driving around my Uncle's farm, I've gotten fairly good at driving too (before I had this I had only driven an automatic).

    So I have a '97 TJ with a 6cyl., 197k, manual, 4.0 L, etc. (theres probably a lot I could say here, but I don't know half of it).

I'm definitely going to have to buy a new top, the windows that are on it now are the originals and the top is about 5 years old, give or take. I'd get a hard top, but that just costs too much IMO, and I'd have it off most of the time anyway. There was a guy in here on one of the forums with a TJ hardtop for $700, but it's red and my jeep is blue. I've also considered a bikini top with the wind breaker and the cover for the back seat area, but I'd probably have more than two people in the Jeep at times.

I'd like to get doors with the roll up windows because back when you could actually zip the current ones down (they're hot glued up now, zipper messed up), I didn't really like the way it felt. But that's quite an extra bit of cash, so I'm looking for some used ones.

For tires I'm planning on getting some 33x10.50 (maybe 11.50) BFG ATs, because I won't be doing enough four wheeling for MTs, and I think I'll be driving a lot and figure MTs tread will wear down much faster.

My Grandparent's just bought a Hyundai and haven't been driving their '97 Jeep Cherokee Laredo as much so I'm going to see if they'll swap motors with me, they have 135k on theirs and I figure it'll make mine last longer, but will it be worth the effort?

Last thing is a CB, I don't know how often I'd use it, but I've always wanted one, and if I'm driving a lot it'll be something to pass the time with. Any suggestions on what brand/kind? I don't really know anything about them.

Just looking for some input, maybe links to used things if you have them, etc.

    Heres a pic:

    Thanks in advance.

killer first car! what do you really plan on doin with the cb? if not really needed you might wind it better to spend on somthin else? if you will use it i love my cobra 75 the thing has all the controlls in the handpiece. wich is nice cuz we have little room in the jeep for extra box's.

well well welcome to the jeep world good to see you.
if you want my option keep your motor. from what i have been told by some killer mechanics, the motor will last about 500thousend. that is for a six cylinder. they tell me that you just need to change the oil often, and always use good oil.

i have a six with almost 300thousend on it. it had a leak so i put some high mileage oil in it and no more problems. well good luck and keep on the trails.

Sahara - I have a few friends who are also getting jeeps so I'll be using it while fourwheeling and just regular driving (long distances, etc.) That sounds pretty awesome.

Tomb Raider - I've had it for a little over a six months or so I would say and I love it, haha.

92yj - That sounds good man, I'll start using good oil once I get it on the road.

Also, what's the best way to get as much gas mileage out of this as I can? Obviously the tires...anything else I could do to help with that?

nice ride.. You need a 4" lift for 33" tires. I took emery paper and plastic-paint to my fender flares, looks like you should too.

if i could make a suggestion, cut them off and save money on the paint.

92yj - How would it look with no fender flares?

kcruisin - I'm probably going to PM you later on making the fender flares look better if I don't cut them off. Also, I completely forgot about the lift, do you think I should spend the extra cash for the lift or just get 31"s?

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I've been here for a while lurking, but it's the thought that counts

Dad said he would pay for most of what I need done to it, and is going to try and have it on the road by the time I get my learners (Apr. 10)

i don't have a good pic of mine but here are some of mine. i would put the money in the lift and tires. if you don't want to go to big i would get tires.

the first thing to do is get your plans in order. IE make a list. and go by the list.

i started by making a list.
1- cut off and out everything i don't need, fenders flares, track bars, sway bar, heater, ect.
2- make bumpers, and tire carrier.
                          3- make rock sliders.
                          4- make light mounts.
                          5- put on a lift.
                          6- on board air system.
                          7- get big tires.

i hope this helps you out.
