• Dishpan Springs - John Bull

Anyone interested in doing the Dishpan Springs trail, then on over to the John Bull trail.

I was thinking of meeting in Lake Arrowhead (Cedar Glen) on hwy 173 & Hook Creek Rd. There is a gas station & a Jensen's minute market there on the corner. (great donuts there - chocolate bizmarks are first come first serve).

The trails are rated black diamond and they haven't had much traffic so far this year. Should be fun.

I was at the JB trailhead today and I don't anticipate any snow - O well! But the gatekeeper's have been upgraded for the season.

33's & lockers required
173 & Hook Cr Rd - Cedar Glen (Hwy 330 is still closed)Use hwy 18 or the dirt 173 from AV
9:00 a.m.
CB Channel 25

As Always - trial is "run at your own risk" and no alcoholic beverages on the trail.

Hey Mike
I'll do it with ya. I was on John Bull today, Saturday and unfortunately someone has messed up the Gate Keeper pretty bad.

I was there with IE4W and there was only one line, and it was very easy. The old harder fun line was gone. Just an pile of randomly misplaced rocks and holes dug out by people getting stuck. None of us could make that line.

I wish who ever is doing work on that run would just leave the gate keeper alone. It was just fine the way it was. I will give them credit for moving all the downed trees alone the trail though. All of them are out of the way now. They did a great job on that.

There was also a menagerie of people there. At least 4 different groups. Hopefully it will be better next week. We'll just have to check it out.

I'll have to talk to Waywegoes (AAT for that portion of 3N10), but I can't imagine they'd make it any easier. I write the Road Maintenance Plan for that trail - and have never tried to soften it up. We're required to maintain (1) line across any obstacle that can be done with 31's and a single locker - but that's not what it sounds like is there now.

I know it certainly wasn't a cakewalk when we were up there a few Saturdays ago.

Pictures would be very helpful....

Hi Jeff.
Actually, I'm not saying they had made it any easier. They just screwed up the hard line to the point it could not be done without a full on rock crawler.

Our old hard line to the left going up was actually gone. And the new line that was created was poorly though out due to the boulder placements. I'm sure it will repair itself in time if its left alone, but for the time being pretty much everyone has to take the easy line to the right. Where's the fun in that?

Also, it's always been our idea that if you've only got 31"s, you probably should'nt be on the run anyway. We never really cared if you wanted to try because it just added to the enterainment for the day. What was wrong with that?

Just my opinion!!

The kind, well thought out comments regarding those who are working hard as volunteers on trails are always appreciated .....

I think Critter has done a fine job on the trail and gatekeeper, the obstacle itsef hasn't changed, just the loose rocks leading up to the obstacle have been moved to one side. This may be a FS requirement or an intended hardline. Looking forward to runnung it!! and thanks for moving the downed trees.

All

USFS policy is that ANY road rated Black Diamond must have a line that can be run with the 31"/single locker setup I listed above. Nothing is going to change that.

With that said, I never said it would be EASY

I have run that run numerous times on 31s, it is not that hard if you know how.
I first ren it on 31s with a limited slip in my old tux park 65 cj5
ran it last year in my cj6 on 31s running a D27 open diff in the front and d44 locked in the rear, 3.73s by the way.
It has always been my opinion that if you need bigger than 31s to run that trail, you are a sorry wheeler.

Hey Mike.

The work on the run I was refering to was just recently completed. Critter was there on Saturday and I said nothing derogatory pertaining to him or his efforts. As far as I'm concerned he's a good guy and his doing some good work. He was actually helping people get unstuck when we came accross him.

Unless you have been there within the last couple of days you would not know what I was talking about. I was initially refering to a log jam on the run that day that was caused by incorrect bolder movement. That's it. No big deal.
