CASTAIC - A 32-year-old man was killed Sunday morning after being trapped in a vehicle that caught on fire in an off-roading accident near Pyramid Lake that left another man with serious injuries, authorities said.
James M. McRae of Castaic died after riding in a Jeep that drove off a fire road east of Paradise Ranch Road, overturned and went up in flames, said Officer Jose Nunez, California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened between 1 and 4 a.m. and left Nicholas M. Rowe, 24, of Castaic, badly injured. But Rowe managed to exit the vehicle, walk to Paradise Trailer Park and call authorities, Nunez said.
Rowe remains in Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Nunez said it is unclear who drove the Jeep.
