    Troy,

Hwy 173 is a graded dirt road that is usally passible in a standard vehicle. It climbs steady and might have a few ruts, but it is not a technicle road. My understanding is that it was maintained so that the off-road firetrucks could drive it. There is a nice drop off to the outside edge the whole way up but that just makes for a great view. Right night it is probably buried in snow.

Tam, hopefully that is good news.

The County may take ownership. Unfortunately it will stay closed except for emergency use. At least the roadbed will be protected.

Here's the article in todays Sun,

Here's how I read this: Caltrans approaches the county and/or SBNF and offers them the road. They all say no way! A year or two goes by, Caltrans makes no progress on this with anyone, and finally just shuts it down, forcing the issue. Now the citizenry gets worked up, and in reaction, the local County officials are forced into taking ownership of the road to save hubris and try to get some positive PR from this.

Exhibit A: ""I .... wish to compliment Supervisor Derry for his efforts recently to find an equitable solution to the issue that meets everyone's needs," said Ray Wolfe, Caltrans' District 8 director....

Yep, that was the wrong link. The next poster had the one I meant to link. Too many message boards; but now you know what a FARKLE is.
