Unpaved Section of Highway 173 Closing Next Month
    By Michael P. Neufeld

Lake Arrowhead, CA - It's now official. CalTrans will be permanently closing the unpaved portion of Highway 173 between Lake Arrowhead and Hesperia next month. The press release issued by the transportation agency didn't indicate an exact date but stated the closure would take place "in early March 2011."

The closure of the unpaved portion of Highway 173 between Lake Arrowhead and Hesperia will become reality in March when CalTrans permanently closes the roadway.

District 8 Director Dr. Raymond Wolfe has told community meetings in a host of mountain communities that safety is the primary reason for the closure.

"The roadway is narrow, unpaved, and in many areas does not have two travel lanes for the safe passage of opposing vehicles," Dr. Wolfe informed the town hall sessions.

CalTrans District 8 Director Dr. Raymond Wolfe announced during a series of community meetings in Big Bear, Running Springs and Crestline his agency had decided to close the unpaved section of Highway 173 between Lake Arrowhead and Hesperia.

Numerous residents in the area voiced their concern about closing the five-mile section of roadway because the route had been used in the past as an escape route during wildfires. The route remains the only unpaved section of state highway in California in which the travel way is comprised of dirt.
    Closure Area

CalTrans will close Highway 173 from west of the original closure at Willow Creek Road, downhill to east of Arrowhead Lake Road, just east of Hesperia.

A CalTrans press release indicates the decision to close the roadway was made by transportation officials late last year based on safety concerns for the motoring public.

Can a highway be deeded over to SBNF and converted to a forest road?

Makes the old phrase "the road less taken" now mean: "take the road today, may be closed tomorrow". Glad I took this neat little jaunt last year when I opted not to do Dishpan because of time of day. Had a cool lookout too; if I remember...

Why can't they just de-designate as a state highway and turn it over to either the Forest Service or San Bernardino? Better yet, widen it and pave it. It would be a better escape route for the people that live in Crestline. The lesson of Hwy 330 failure should make them realize that there isn't enough escape routes from the mtn.

That is typical of what is happening all over the state. Someone assumes that we can't think for ourselves. Was there ever a fatality on this section of roadway? How many years has this road been fine to travel? Once again disappointing. Someone else else to get out of office.

Thanks for the heads up. We have been up and down that road ALOT. Only once did someone sneak around the corner at us but both drivers were attentive and everything was fine.

And I can positively say that we have used that road at least a couple times because 138 was on fire and we were heading up the mountain.

I just called the First District Supervisor's office and told them about this. They did not know of it. Please, everyone else call Supervisors office. The mountain district also.

How would the Fire District Supervisor not know? That's a scary thought - sounds like a movie: the Fire Chief goes to evacuate ppl via the 173 and they hit a barricade and all perish...

Locals would not be happy about the closing of a possible fire escape route.

                          Update:

from AAT Yahoo Groups (summarized): Caltrans is willing to give the highway to the Forrest Service. The process seems to be under consideration.

Why can't that section of the highway be turned over to the Forest Service
as a!OHV road? Many adopt a trail volunteers are available for
free maintenance as with all the forest service roads and this would still.
allow another emergency escape route for local residences in case of wild
                          fire?

                          Dear Mr. Gill:
Caltrans has tried to relinquish the road over the years and the Department
                          remains willing to do so.
                          Thank you

It looks like Caltrans wants to get rid of it....why can't we take it??????

im curious to take this road now. from the map it looks pretty curvey in some spots. is this not your average dirt road? or is it grated enough for low slung street cars? either way im looking for an excuse to drive it now. looks like it cuts through some pretty areas
