  • Fighting the Mojave Desert Land Grab

This is a fairly long post sorry)but PLEASE take the time to read it.

Some of this will be redundant from other posts and the attempt here is to put this all together in one thread and summarize what can be done and what is being done to fight off this land grab.

    Here are the battle fronts:
    1. USMC studying the expansion of 29 Palms Marine Base into Johnson Valley
    2. OVER 100 Energy projects proposed for the Mojave Desert including:
    3. 400+ ft tall wind electric generators atop the Granite Mountains
    4. A 13,000+ acre solar power plant covering all of Lucerne Valley Dry Lake. There are proposed 2,000 structures measuring 500’wide x 300’tall solar panels. These would be as tall as a 30 story building and almost as wide as two football fields! This is not a misprint!
    5. LADWP running a new high transmission line from Yucca Valley to Apple Valley along the bottom of the north slope of the San Bernardino Mts. Unknown if this would affect access to Rattle Snake Canyon.

    What can we do?

    1. Write your congressman, especially those of us in Jerry Lewis’s district
    2. Make sure you and all your friends and family sign petitions. Sarah started one and only has three signatures.
    3. Go to the BLM website and check out all the proposals. Send comments that are mature and thought out.
    4. Write the San Bernardino County Supervisors. Again, send comments that are mature and thought out.
5 Talk to everyone you know who will be affected by this.

This evening I met with the new editor of the Lucerne Valley Paper. The paper has just been purchased by Freedom newspapers. (OC Register, VV Daily Press). She does not know the area and wants to get to know the people and the area.
I told her about MJR and what we stand for and we want to invite her to accompany us on some trips into Johnson Valley, the Granite Hills and other areas impacted by all these alternate energy projects. So she can see first hand the impact these projects will have. She is excited about this and really wants to go. I will be contacting Mitch Great 88, our foremost expert on the historical, geological, and cultural sites in and around JV to help me plan a trip.
I also want to plan a trip around and in the Granite Mtns. I know there are very few roads going in and if someone wants to help me put a trip together, either email or PM me. I am tentatively planning for April 13th. I’ll be posting it soon.

Thanks everyone and remember, if we want to preserve public lands for public use, we can not depend on others to do it for us.

Roger, thanks for your hard work on this. You rock! I'm glad to hear she's willing to see "our side" of the story. Hopefully your actions and outline above will inspire more people to do the same! My newest motto is, "one person CAN make a difference."

Well, why doesn't any of that suprise me? Thanks Roger, you've obviously been doing a lot of foot work to get all that info together. I may be able to help on April 13. What can I do?

Thank you Kurt, I appreciate the offer!

Even though I live within eyesight of the Granite Mtns I've done very little exporing there. I went bird hunting up a canyon 20 years ago with a couple of guys and that's about it.

It's a pretty big area and surprisingly, there are almost no roads into the mountains. I'm hoping someone has done some exploring and can assist in the route planning. I've been carefully studying Google Earth.

I do know that there is a trail that goes in from the west somewhere that goes by a spring with cottonwood trees, but I don't know the exact location. If you have any experience exploring the area, please let me know. Do you know if you are going to be free on 4/13 for the trip? I'll be posting the trip shortly and I sure would like the reporter going with us to fall in love with the desert and appreciate it's beauty.

I've never been there or anywhere in JV. I'd like to tag along so I know what all this is about. What's the difficulty? Nothing extreme is there?

Johnson Valley can be really extreme! But this trip will be exploring all the Historical, geological, & cultural points. Petraglyghs, mines, rock formations, and the like. I should be posting it soon so keep an eye-out for it. Don't feel like you will be tagging along! Hey you are a member of MJR in good standing!!

My boys found this spring and I do not believe it's the one you are talking about. I'm going to contact them and get a better idea where it's located.

You taught Mitch all he knows? Wow, he has a great teacher!

Yes, HE DOES! There is also a series of trails on the south end of the range, near Lions pride. They may be posted, though...

Also, Roger, there is an OLD mining area app. 11 mi. east of the Gran. Mtns., on SV 183. A stone cabin still stands at this site, and it dates back to the 1860s,70s. Ive found food cans that prove it. The paper lady may be interested in this, after all, its her new back yard!

                          Well Dave,

I take a day and a half in San Diego away from the computer and now YOU are the teacher, OK I see how it is. Roger knows who the REAL teacher is!

Roger I won't be at Calico but we will talk when you get back. I've already marked some topo's and have GPS coordinates for the area that you are talking about. Call me.
