I will ask this when I meet with someone that knows something more than I do. Hopefully today, if not then tomorrow. I do know it was published in the Marine Times a while ago. I only learned of that today, I hadn't seen the article before. It's online, at the AMA website in the thread about JV.

I don't think the Corps is concerned with being decietful about this. If it's going to happen, then it's going to happen. If another plan is presented that makes more sense, then I've been assured it's going to be looked at just as seriously.

It's no problem for me to try to help. My question would be...did anyone call the congressmen today? Please try to work it into your schedule tomorrow? Seriously, when I called they said... "the what? where is this?"

I'd like to know where they stand on ensuring that JV remains public land until such time as the BLM designates a new piece of property for OHV use!

      I just called both offices.
Jery Lewis' office has a gentleman by the name of Tom Nolin there, very nice guy. He is sending an email to Washington regarding the proposal; I linked him to the same site you posted here Nick. He said he was not aware of it at all, but that he will definitely send that email to his constituants in DC. Duncan Hunter's office will have a gent named Steve call me in the morning. The girl that answered the phone there said she was not aware of it either. They are now. I'm sending my own emails as soon as I'm done here.

I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow. The more of us that respond the more chance we have of getting of getting our voices heard.

      Shad,
I think your idea is a good one. If we can get a clean up or something going out in JV we might get some publicity for the cause. We could use some help here on organizing an event from someone who has experience... hint hint... anyone?

      Thanks

Okay, a SERIES of posts to follow.

I'm going to be posting a series of things this morning, chew them over on your own time.

First, I find it hard to believe that Lewis didn't have this on his radar screen. From what I have read on AMA, he was in the room when the brief that started this whole thing was given.

Second, I did some looking around into when this became public. I don't read the local newspapers here...but August 1st this was published in the local rag.

onto my next post. I would put it all into one, but they are pretty different thoughts.

Who knows. That might be the standard answer for first time callers.

Those of you that read other .bbs forums may have seen me post this personal opinion elsewhere:

I realize everybody is excited, because we've seen our lands get locked up before.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This project is still in the study phase, and they're studying a lot of land in an attempt to decide what areas meet (or don't meet) the training requirements... all the while taking into consideration the environmental constraints as well as the needs of us [the community and OHV users]. I've been in the Marines long enough to know nothing happens fast and nothing happens in a vacuum. If you look at the slides in the brief on the AMA Web site there are courses of action ranging from 198k acres to 437k acres--but also included in that brief is the option for no action at all. (It's listed first) This means, to the best of my understanding, that it's a possibility no growth will be permitted. (Note: nothing is approved by anyone yet) To me, that reiterates this project truly is in the study phase. As a Coyote I work on the base and I'm part of the training element and I can tell you, in no uncertain terms, this place is crowded. The tenant units that live here must train also, outside of all the units that come to visit us to train. And MEB level training...forget about it. We're restricted from training too close to the borders of the base, we're limited by terrain features such as mountain ranges and dry lake beds and in some areas, we don't train because there are tortoises or artifacts that can't be disturbed. Remember, overhead fire is not authorized and a howitzer battery can shut down two or more training areas by themselves. Not to mention that as impossible as it may seem, if you're shooting long distances like that and your target is a mountain...you can actually MISS. What do you tell the guys on the other side of the mountain?

From the outside, I'm sure it looks huge but truly, there's a lot of training going on out there. Not just training for Iraq and Afghanistan, either. More than 75% of the deployable units in the Marine Corps train here annually, and they did so before September 11th. It's easy to say the training isn't necessary, or the war is winding down, but Marines are always prepared to deploy, worldwide, in a moments notice. We train for that. I stopped by the Public Affairs Office and they said they're in the process of finalizing more documents to release to the public regarding the project. When I get it (and I'll be pestering them often) you'll get it.

According to wiki, Stumps has over 930 square miles of surface area. Camp Pendleton has over 200 square miles of surface area and 17 miles of coastline. San Clemente Island has over 80 square miles of surface area and 60 miles of coastline. Ft Irwin has over 1000 square miles of surface area. China Lake has over 1700 square miles of surface area.

We all want our forces to have the best training possible. It seems between all these bases located in Southern California there should be plenty of opportunity to shoot and MISS and not hit any civilians.

Is the JV issue on the radar of Assemblyman Joel Anderson?

Honestly, and I don't mean this in a bad way... I meant missing and hitting other training Marines.

I don't want to get into a huge debate over this detail, the big picture is the Marines do need this base to expand, there's no getting around it. BUT we [OHV] also dont want JV closed. If we can influence senators & congressmen & assembly men to recommend other Courses of Action over the JV course of action, that would be success in my opinion.

I have always supported the US Military, heck, even in my current Job at Southern California Logistics Airport I support just about all branches. But for the Marines to take Johnson Valley would totally suck. That is so used by the public I would hate to see it lost forever. I wonder how much land they really need. Maybe it's the govt mind set of "let's ask for twice as much as we need and settle for 1/2"
