  • Can it be done?

So, I came up with this idea. It's probably been done before, but I dunno, it just hit me this morning. Well I was thinking, you get the measurements to the spare tire right? One that will fit on the spare tire brackets. Take the spare, and mount it inside the jeep. Wherever works is fine...but then you go to like a metal fabricator or whatever, and make an external gas tank that mounts to those brackets. Route a flebible fuel line from the tank, under the door hinge, and run it through the body and surround it in a little rubber grommet so water wouldn't leak. Then run steel lines that would splice into your existing fuel line, and put a separate fuel guage in the jeep for your existing tank. put a shutoff valve on the new tank, so that it could be removable. Now think...You have the gas tank under the jeep, the gas tank mounted on your rear, and since it's built to the dimensions of a tire, you could have the carrier racks that mount above the spare tire/gas tank that has jerry can mounts....interesting idea....no?

interesting yes, practical, i kinda doubt it. first off it would weigh a lot, and having that much weight that high is generally considered a bad thing. Also you run into the issue of the tailgate not being able to support said extra weight. if you want more fuel capacity do what I did, get a fuel cell that holds more than the stock tank. I had a buddy fab it up for me ouyt of .120 wall Aluminum. Internally baffled, internal sump, uses the stock fuel pump, and holds a little over 20 gallons.

Is that removable? Like can you take it out and put...say...the back seat back in. Cause my jeep is a daily driver, and i'd like something for long weekend trips and stuff, where you take out the back seat, you and a couple buddies dissapear for a few days.

how often do you need more than 19 gallons?
I can Drive from shaver lake, through the Ducy and back from kaiser pass on a single stock tank of gas... and thats with a 4.0 and 35" Krawlers.
It's not what you have. it's what you do with what you have.

After you fill up in San Filipe, you have to get all the way to Gonzaga Bay, and *HOPE* the Pemex is open. If it isn't, you are wise to wait until it is. Sometimes it may take a few days....or weeks. Having an extra 5 gallons is a good thing.

3 cans, 6 gallons each. Mix and match water/fuel as you want (I generally carry 2 water cans to put out illegal campfires)

Bob, you gotta realize that if I come across _your_ illegal campfire, _you_ will be putting it out. I'll just offer to supply the water.

Problem is, at my advanced age, people's attitude directly affects my memory. If I'm pissed off, I really have trouble discerning one can from the other ......

I like the water spout on your water can, so you don't have to remove it from the rack every time you want a drink.

I got the idea from a Friend of mine. I buy them 3-4 at a time from Camping World, they deteriorate in the sunlight. That part of the rack is notched, I only have one of my two cans set up with the spigot.

Very useful to wash hands, face after a dusty trail!
