Bench Vise, which one???

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a 5-6" model.

I don't like the offerings at Lowes. Rick and ChrisL have had bad luck with Harbor Fruit. I've seen what Sears has to offer.

Anybody have a recomendation on a good vise at around $100 (or less )

Anything with "made in china" stamped, cast, stuck on, or labeled in any fashion, is probably worth avoiding. Check out the swap meets and look for a old Wilton....they were pretty good before they went to china....I would not recommend Lowes....I have one and it sucks (well, there is worse out there, but it still isn't all that great).

I got this one on ebay for $15 ! (then $15 for shipping, jacked! :mad I tried using it to put my u-jpoints in but started bending the handle. You get what you pay for. You see I had to break out the proper tool for the job. Any how I bolted it to an old endtable, when I get a real work bench I'll get a real vise. I'd say be sure and get a beefy one with a fat handle.

o.k., new semi related question... I'm wanting to get a drill press, not a floor model but a bench press. whadaya think about the wilton 99170... just not sure.

I'll be honest, I don't really care for any of the modern, affordable tools. They are all junk (including the ones that I have). They are mostly imported from China (who has no natural source for steel, so they melt down our junk cars and build stuff from that), and the material sucks. Tolerances are HUGE, and the fit of parts is crappy (to allow easy assembly and larger manufacturing tolerances). This kills the accuracy of the tool. Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, Rigid, etc., used to be good tools, now they are all the same crap. They have all shipped manufacturing off shore and their quality has gone down the crapper. Personally, I would prefer to buy older tools at a swap meet, put some time and money into them to clean them up, replace motors/bearings/etc to bring them back to spec., and have a much better tool than buy a shiny new POS.

JMO.

Oh, I have never seen, let alone used, a Wilton drill press.
