  • CA Compliant AR15

Just picked up my new Smith and Wesson M&P15 last week. I was going to build my own "off list lower" but just decided to buy a complete rifle. It has been modified too only hold a fixed 10 round magazine to make it CA legal.

    My other toy.

What is the modification to make it CA legal? I mean, what makes it hold 10 rounds and not more.

The part is called a Bullet Button, it locks the magazine into the magazine well so it requires a tool to take the magazine out. It replaces the stock magazine release. People in California cannot buy magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds.

          NICE AR!

But the *hi-lift mount* isn't very practical...

First off, that is a sweet rifle and I want one!

But how do you load the damn thing? thru the ejection port? or do you flop the upper forward an load it? what is the difference between the AR15 10 round mag and ... say ... a MINI-14, 10 round detatchable mag? I allways thought they were the same mags. ??
:gun: my rifle is not illegal, it's just undocumented... :gun:

The Mini 14 Mag Is Not As Wide As The Ar Mag. The Mini Mag Is Also Missing The Slot On The Top Left Side Of The Mag For The Catch. I Just Held My 40rd Mini Up To A 30 Rd Ar Mag.

*OH, AND NICE WEAPONS DENNIS. SO WHEN IS THE NEXT MJR SHOOT?

The Second Amendment protects all the rest!

                  Yeah, X2 with that.

Also, Does it field strip the same as a non-CA compliant AR15? Can you remove the mag at all for cleaning the lower receiver?

                  Where can I get one?

Basically CA considers a fixed magazine , as a magazine that requires a tool to remove it. CA considers a bullet tip a tool. The part i had put on, the "Bullet Button" replaces the stock mag release. In order to release the mag you use a bullet tip to press a small button in the center of the mag release. Going by the letter of the law my rifle is 100% legal. But a lot of law enforcement think that just because it is an AR15 that they are illegal. If you are nervous about dropping the magazine with people around you flip the upper foward and pop one at a time into the magazine. here is an anti gun news report that shows how the bullet button works. Just dont pay attention to all the lies in the story.

Here is a good site that has all you need to know about California AR and AK style weapons. www.calguns.net if you read the FAQs and posts a lot of the questions can be answered.I got mine at www.tenpercentfirearms.com. I bought a complete rifle but you can build your own and save a couple hundred. Here is a small section of the laws defining Assault weapons.

The term “assault weapon” also means any firearm that falls under one of the following
definitions pursuant to Penal Code section 12276.1:
                      (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable
magazine and any one of the following:
                      (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
                      (B) A thumbhole stock.
                      (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
                      (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
                      (E) A flash suppressor.
                      (F) A forward pistol grip.

                      (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to
                      accept more than 10 rounds.

Well that's fine, I use a bullet tip to field strip anyway. I was hoping I wouldn't have to carry around a special "handled" gizmo that won't fit in my cleaning kit. It's been 15 years since I've shot an AR15. I do miss the feeling. It just won't be the same without the 3 shot burst though
