Yup did that too. Also in the 70's ran the tracks from south down, Theres really no west, the gorge runs south to north. I like doing stuff I havent done b4. Always wanted to know what the tracks looked from below.....though its wilderness and restricted , it always cool to see if a rig could get to the bridge...u wont get it through the gorge without a lot of work.......now there is another way........

I was so intrigued by your trip, I did a bit of research. Recently, in the past few years, they have been sending test trains into the tunnels with container cars two high, to see if theyll fit. They had to modify a few of the seventeen tunnels to fit the cars. I believe they will start running regular freight trips through these mountains again soon.

The gorge area is really pretty cool and its in your backyard also. Not much wheeling but some good hiking

I caught a couple of trains going through. They have 2 inspectors on the front strapped to the train looking for damage.

While I was in the gorge 2 cobra gunships came screaming through. I couldnt get out my camera fast enough....that was really cool. I could see the pilot they was that close.

Next up going to try and find that plane....

Did you find it? A friend (backpacker/hiker) just asked about this and I dug up this thread. Interested to see if you made it, and how bad the hike is. Will an out of shape skinny guy make this one?
