      The World's Longest Curved Trestle

It is on my list of things to do before summer. Let me know when you plan on going Vern.

You can only get to it by hiking.

John and Adolph Spreckels built the trestle. They were at one time the financiers and owners of this San Diego & Arizona Railway (SD&A), completed in November 15, 1919. They had the vision to build a railway through Carrizo Gorge which back then was called the ‘impossible railroad’. The beauty of the gorge and the surrounding vistas enhance the remaining architecture and structure of the railroad."

The tracks are on private property and they are used, so unauthorized persons are not allowed along the tracks. Besides trespassing, hiking along the tracks is dangerous because there are numerous narrow tunnels and smaller trestles along the route.

The trestle is still legally accessible from Anza Borrego State Park land, without hiking along the railroad tracks. The recommended approach is from Mortero Palms/Palm Canyon to the east, but the trestle can also be accessed via Carrizo Gorge to the west. You can drive part way up Carrizo Gorge, but the hike from the closest parking area is said to be more difficult than the hike from Mortero Palms.

Ok I tested out that mountain ridge today.

The first 1/2 mile was really brutal almost made me give up. It was a 1000 ft steep climb.

Did about 2miles in. That left me about 1/2 mile from the bridge. Ran out of time , ran out of steam and that 1/2 mile was ..well pretty bad.

But it was a great day out!

                Bridge up date

Theres two ways to skin this cat. I'll take the lighting fast Carrizo Gorge route! Yea my butt.

Theres a section in that gorge thats a swamp, its full of some brush with thorns. I spent an hr figuring how to get through. I took the west wall. Put on my cliff climbing boots had to do some climbing!

That gorge is not user friendly! Want to see what that rail road looked from the bottom. I wouldnt ride on it.

                Heres some shots

The bridge, took to long to get this close. My day was half done. So I again I climbed up the west wall for this shot.

I still plan on getting to it from the top next month. Was a fun hike.

                  Wow, are those rail cars?

What was the bridge built for? Freight? Mining? Passengers? What is it used for now? It looks like it's been kept up by someone for some reason. Most old wooden trestles burn down.

I think those cars went over in the late 70's. The one at the bottom was cement, the two at the top or at least one had coors beer.

The track was closed late 70's early 80's when some of the tunnels colasped from an earthquake or fire.

The track was just recently re-opened.

Theres a DC-3 up on the north ridge someplace north of mccain valley up along the northern ridge. It was San Diego's worst air diaster in the 50's. I hear the plane is still there. Might go look fer it.

I saw a video of this place from a guy and a girl a while back. . They were walking a while and then came up upon some rescuers recovering a guy who was climbing and got hurt or died. Pretty freaky stuff though

The Goat Trestle was on our list of to-do's when we were in Anza Borrego but we didn't make it (this time). From the maps I've seen it's seems to be easier to access form the Mortero Palms. I've been told that the hike from the west is quite difficult. This is a pretty cool video that takes about the tresle and the mysterious ghost lights of Anza Borrego.

Yup did that too. Also in the 70's ran the tracks from south down, Theres really no west, the gorge runs south to north. I like doing stuff I havent done b4. Always wanted to know what the tracks looked from below.....though its wilderness and restricted , it always cool to see if a rig could get to the bridge...u wont get it through the gorge without a lot of work.......now there is another way........
