  • Yj wheelbase stretch help.

I am planing on stretching my yj's wheelbase at least 6 inches. I think that I have read every build on the www about it. I want to keep my Jeep pretty mild. I am going to keep my same axles (HP30/8.8) and I want to stay spring under. I only want to run 35s but I should be able to run 37 later if I get some stronger axles. I want to keep my rear seat so I'll be using the genright EXT gas tank. I am going to use XJ springs in the rear and maybe waggy springs in the front(i may just brake down and buy some alcans because I am picky). I plan on trimming up my rear fenders and using tj flares.

What I am still trying to figure out is my rear spring hangers. The Blue Torch Fab kit looks great and easy to install. But I really want to keep my bumper/ tire carrier. I have seen people make their own spring hangers and I have seen people use the RuffStuff Way Back Spring hangers. I like the RuffStuff hanger but my Dirtworx bumper is only bolted on to the rear core. How can I mount spring hangers far back enough for XJ springs and keep my bumper. Also I want to keep my Jeep as low as possible. Looking to be 2-3 inches over stock when I am done. Any help from the more experienced Jeep builders is appreciated.

The only way I have seen this done is by either moving them to the back on the rear bumper or custom crossmember. If you don't want to go that way and your stretching why not add to rear of the frame to extend it out more. I saw that on a Jeep on Pirate and it didn't look bad at all. IIRC it was a YJ.

xj springs on a spring under yj will net you 1'' of lift, at first and just sag from there, they are also very soft, also make sure you build a traction bar for axlewrap,

You can help fight axle wrap and sagging if you take an XJ spring and run a double main spring

I thought about the 4link. I really like the simplicity of leafs. I plan on doing a second main leaf. My jeep is really heavy with the tire carrier and the hard top. Roll cage is still to come. I will end up using 2-3 inch lift springs in the rear. I was hoping I could get away with no traction bar if I was still spring under. But if I am going to build a traction bar I might as well be spring over.

My bumper/tire carrier is bolted to the rear cross member with eight 1/2" grade 8 bolts and to the frame with two 1/2" grade 8 bolts. It is the Drixworx bumper. Would I be ok to weld my spring hangers on this bumper withought building a custom cross member.

Scratch that. I don’t want to put the hangers on my bolted on bumper. I am going to just use the blue torch fab kit and use the OrFab tire carrier that attaches to the tub and not the bumper. Just add on another $500 to the build. I am going to enjoy this build though. I can buy the tank next month. Then I can buy the OrFab tire carrier the next month and the BTF kit after that.... and so on.

I got a way better idea:

Chain your jeep up to another jeep at both ends.

                  Start pulling

                  Heat the frame with torches.

                  Wa-Laa! stretched jeep

JeepTubes.com has a Poison-Spider-style rear stinger/ tire carrier kit for $150.00. Of course, you'd need some full corner guards to do that right. It's HREW, but if you pay the difference in material, I'm sure dude would substitute DOM. You could set this thing up to mount to your bumper/ tub, or weld it to a steel plate that bolts to your frame.

Just wondering, what's the reason for the stretch?

I want to strech it mainly for ride quality on the highway. Also because it will give me more options in a few years when I am ready to do something a little more hard core. Strech or not I need new springs. I have added a lot of weight this year.

I have seen the tire carriers that are the stinger style. I open my tailgate a lot so it is important to me that the carrier be easy to open.

I'm starting to think that waggy springs front an back will be plenty fo my rig. 100 inches and 35s will be nice. The money I save will allow me to do a tummy tuck this year too.

What are you doing with your bolt on rear bumper when you're done with it?
