I switched to a CAI 3yrs ago when I didn't know about the dust in the tube thing.When I saw it I had already got rid of the stock box.I have been using a UNI foam filter overtop the K&N with good results.Make sure to use their air filter oil or something that is designed for dirtbikes/dusty environment.

have a look at this one. imagine, if the filters in this testing were as unsatisfactory being in a box, what theie inefficiency would be if they were completely exposed to the dirt.
i have been through the conical filters, and all that jazz... i am back to th stock type box, and am quite content with it.

I run the K&N conical, with Banks cat back exhaust. I service the filter after every run, and inspect the crossover tube onch a month on average. I've seen very little dust in the tube or the TB. I love the K&N, been using them on all my off road toys (bikes, boats, jeeps). Doing the intake and exhaust mods at the same time gave me a quite noticeable improvment in power, and in the mornings when the engine is cold it sounds like a jet engine starting up. I love that sound! There are more variables involved in the performance of any filter than those used in those tests. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I know a couple (they work for my company, where delta pressures and micron levels are very important). I ask them questions all the time, that's why I know that those tests, while fairly indepth, don't cover all the variables. Maintenance is key; if you don't do it alot, then stick with the stock unit. Nothing wrong with that filter at all.

I may want a stock airbox but can it be used with a York 210 along with AC on a 99TJ? Kilby says no just wondered if anyone has tried it. This mod is on my to do list so no sense getting one if it will be in the way.

A stock airbox sits in the same place as the York, so no it will not work. You might be able to move it to above the distributor, I have seen some people do it that way. This is easier:



The airbox is from a '91 GM 3.3l V6.

OK, so I get the filter thing. Ever since my VW days, I figured out that K&N filters were moslty hype. That being said, what about the cold air boxes.....do they help?

A thought on cold air... the point of a CAI is that cold air is more dense then hot air. The more molecules introduced to the cyl- the more the mixture expands and burns, creating more HP.

I put an open air filement on my K1500 street truck and noted great improvements due to multiple reasons, but that was a change from a K&N conical remote setup. Once the bay warms up, I do loose noticable power but I have a reflexxon cowl induction hood waiting to be sprayed and mounted.

This app is definately different from the apps we're speaking of. My K1500 is a street queen packing a reman 350ci w/ higher compression, and dust sure ain't it's thing. It's been off road with no ill effects but CT trails lack mondo dust like I've seen in more arid climate.
