why not just pull a d44a from the junkyard? should be about $150, get the warranty in case the one you pull is bad as well.
An XJ will always cost you less then any girl ever will, and you will always know when the spark is gone.

If he does, he just needs to be wary as it seems nearly every year Grand Cherokee seems to have a different bracket setup. I bought a D44a for my son's 2002 & the one they sent from a '99 (I think) wasn't even close to having the brackets in the right locations.

it was a wheel bearing. because the 44 a is a c clip axle when the wheel bearing goes the axle goes with it. went to pick a part... 25$ for the shaft and 25 for the bearing at napa. seal was 3.99. not having to rebuild the diff... priceless.

Well, that explains both the howling and the play.

well i changed the rear bearings took it for a test drive and the p.o.s. is still making the same noise. i was convinced it was the front all along but after seeing the rear bearings and axle i thought that fixing them would get rid of the noise. it kinda sounds like the front brakes i think. it sounds like there is a warped rotor hitting the brakepads. but the sound gets a little more noticeable when i hbit the brakes. which makes me think its the brakes. only thing is if the rotor was warped u would feel it in the pedal. its nice and smooth. but i did notice when i checked the diff fluid the front was low so im hoping its not the front axle. i will be so pissed. im already over it. and ideas give me some input. i heard that the front is more of a bitch to fix than the rear. is that right?

I heard the front is easier to fix than the rear. Hummm.

Jacked up the front, and spin the wheel and see if you hear the noise? Then, remove the pads and rotor, then spin it again. Noise gone?

i thought of that when i checked them the first time. for some reason when there is weight on then it makes the noise. im going to wake up early and dick with it tomorrow.

I will throw this out there because it happened to me. If you have screw in wheel studs, check that one or more of them haven't backed out a bit. They hit the ebrake lever and it sounds like what you are describing. If you don't have screw in studs, I'll shut up and go away... BTW this only pertains to the rear, axle that is...
