K&N sells a cleaner/oil combo kit for their filters . . . Pretty sure 4WP keeps it in stock.

I use the kit Schmo is talking about. They sell it at the off-road expo in Pomona for about half the price as in store. I bought a couple kits then. You might want to pick up a couple if you go to that.

            Geebo,

If you buy the "Recharger", you'll run out of cleaner long before you do the oil. Simple Green works great for cleaning the filter. With my exposed airfilter and my open tube fenders I clean mine every 2 weeks (5 or 6 runs). Just don't over-oil the filter.

Personally I'd trash the K&N (and I did trash mine years ago) and go back to a paper element air filter. A K&N is barely more effective at filtering out fine dust and silica than a screen door is.

Took you longer than I thought to chime in with the K&N hate.

Geebo, you should make sure you read this thread as there's data about how horrible K&N filters are:
                http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=11650

FWIW, I just cleaned my K&N recently and I didn't see any dust in the intake tube.

Exactly! I've been running one for almost five years and never had an issue, so blow me! Did I say that nicely enough???

Did you stick your finger in there? I had a K&N on my Jeep for a couple years. I took it off to clean and ran my finger on the inside of the intake tube, sure as shit there was a very fine layer of "dirt" on the tube. I took that pile o crap off and put the stock airbox back on. I'm pretty sure the Chrysler engineers have a little more vested interest in keeping dirt out of the engine then a aftermarket company.

I don't need graphs to know they don't filter properly.

Actually yes. I did run my finger inside with a little wipe to see if there was fine dust. None.

I run the "pre-filter" to, not sure it helps much, but again... no dirt in the intake tube.

I agree. Totally. But just like everything else, there are trade offs. I like the way my engine performs and sounds with the K&N filter, and the trade off is I have to service it frequently (like after every run). That's how I do it, it works well for me and as I said, no problems (including dust in the crossover tube). It just depends on what your looking for. If you don't want to service your air cleaner as much as I do, stick with stock; the performance gains are minimal at best with aftermarket A/Cs anyway. If you're doing it cuz you like the way it looks, well then your missing the point of function over form (looks neato under the hood) and are probably superficial anyway I should know, I like the way it looks...
It's your time and money, spend it how you want.

Why not switch to one of the dry element filters which filter better and do not require the cleaning regimen of the k&n dust funnels? Amsoil makes the Ea series cone filters and there is also AEM and others available.

I blow my filter out after every couple runs w/ shop air or even on the trail w/ my Co2. No special cleaners or oils to mess w/.

Well said. I put on a cone shaped filter to get rid of the stock box to make room for my OBA. I freaked out when I first saw the data JB posted, so I do keep an eye on the tube and run my finger in it each time I clean the K&N. So far, nothing for me to worry about.
