  • I am going to 35" tires 10" wheels or 8" wheels

    I am going to buy some new 35x12.50-15 BFG mudders KM2's. I am trying to decide on aluminum 10" wheels or 8"wheels . What do you guys think I should get in wheel width and you reason why. I know some of the pros and cons but I want guys that have experience to give me there input. I dont plan on running bead locks at least right no unless I can find some at a reasonable price.

    well i would think it all comes down to what tire width you would want to run. at 12.5 theres around 4.5inches of excess rubber which is fine. but if you want to ever go anything wider, which i cant amagine you would then i would go with the 10's. im running 35x14.50 on a 10 inch width and im more then happy with it.
    no real information here, just my opinion.

      I dont think that tire measures a true 12.50 at the tread width. I think its measured at the side wall.

        I ran 35's on 8inch wheels. no probs.

          8 inch wheels. We run our 35" MT/R's on 8 inch M/T wheels. 10 is too wide.

            I run 33" tires on a 8" wheel and never had a bead come off and it seems to protect the wheels a little better. I had a buddy with a sami with 10" wheel and 32" tires and the tire poped off the bead really easy and we couldnt get it to go back on even with a strap. I was thinking the 35's with the taller side wall wouldnt be a problem though. I kinda of wanted the extra width to help with side to side stability but dont want it if I am going create problems popping the beads. Anybody with problems with bead popping off with 10" wheels and 35" tires with low pressure of ~10-12 psi.

              I blew beads all the time on my 10" wheels. 8" wheels are much better at holding the bead.

                I agree, I run 8 inch wide rims for that reason with 35s and have never had an issue. Granted a 10 inch rim does look better. In fact, I also have 35x14.5 super swamper boggers on 8 inch rims too. While I would have went with 10 inch rims with those the 8s is what I had. The upside is with a tire like that on a 8 inch rim I can go down to 5 psi and the tires hold the bead and do very well in performance on the trails.

                  Beau, neither Steve or me have blown a bead yet at 12 psi on 10" rims. Still 8" rims would be your better choice. To go wider use a rim with either 31/4 or 31/2 backspacing that will make the tires stick out a bit more

                    I've been running a 10" rim for almost 2 years now, run at 13 psi and have never blown a bead.

                      I heard steve was loosing air when he rubs the rocks but it might be the rims or those tires needing a bead lock. I know he is looking for some bead lock wheels. I will have to check on the back spacing on the wheels I am looking at.

                        There you have it...pros and cons. When I was in your shoes and deciding...there was always one more pro out there. So I went with 8" with my 35's;..no issues what so ever at ten psi;

                        Close friends of mine, on the other hand does not regret with their 10" wheel at 10 psi. Pretty much will be personal preference. Hth.

                          Beau, Steve's krawlers burb air below 15 psi but they are on 8" rims. One of the things that keep beads from getting unseated is how big the bumps on the inside of the rim are where the bead pops over when you seat the tire some rims are better in that respect than others. That make sense to you?

                            you want 8" rims, they keep the tires tall, let you air down a lil more, and they stay away from the rocks more than the 10" rims.
