A neighbor of mine and I are going to build a rack for his truck, one of those general contractor type racks that mounts to the bed and extends over the cab for carrying lumber, plywood, drywall, and what not.
I'm wondering what size tubing would be sufficient? He wants round tubing, so we'll go with that, probably 1.25 or 1.5" diameter, for those diameters, what thickness might be appropriate? would .120 wall thickness be overkill? This is on a small-ish truck, a Frontier. The truck is a 4 door with a relatively short bed, so there will be a good bit hanging forward over the cab, so we're thinking make it double tubed (one tube about 6 inches higher than the lower tube) and connect it every few feet with some smaller diameter tubing, for rigidity.
We won't have any bends (we don't have a bender) but I did pick up a tubing notcher (JD2 TN-100), maybe the next project will net me a bender, slowly accumulate more tools
Just thought I'd ask here, get some feedback from yall since I know some of yall fab stuff up alot
