  • I guess it would be custom...

I removed my spare tire form my tailgate because I could see the stress it was putting on it. One day the door just opened while i was driving down the road and that was the final straw. The tire has been in the back of the Jeep ever since. Anyway I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions on how to secure it while on the trail. Driving on the street has been fine but i don't want that thing taking my head off on the trail.

I use ratchet straps to secure mine inside the tub. The rear seat rails make perfect tie down points and are just wide enough for my 33" to sit between them.

What size tire? Is your tailgate latch adjusted properly?
An XJ will always cost you less then any girl ever will, and you will always know when the spark is gone.

That big enough to bend the tailgate, especially on the trail. One option is to go grab some interior tie-down points out of the junkyard. Sean has some out of a suburban. They are triangle shaped and fold down. They are very sturdy and do not rattle. You may have to drop your fuel tank to put them in though.

for some reason i think there may be some tie off points in the Jeep already now that you mentioned it.. I'll take another look God I can't wait to get a swing out tire carrier built or bought.

I've had my 33x12.50x15 on the tailgate for about 3 years, including a lot of train runs, without bending my tailgate. The trick is to extend the rubber on the tailgate to wedge the tire so it doesn't vibrate when on the road/trail.

There should be some footman loops... They're not ideal because they're so short, so you can't just hook the ratchet straps to them, you must loop the strap under them. They will work for securing some loads, although I have no idea how much.

I ended up buying some quick links from the hardware store and attaching them to the hold down points in the tub for a tie down point. It worked... Now I've got a tire carrier and don't have to worry about it
