Although if you get that Teraflex extra short one, you need an electronic gismo to get your speedo correct. If $$$ is a concern, and you don't have a reason for the "extra short" output shaft, just go with a standard AA (Advance Adapters) SYE to strengthen your output shaft. $475 shipped...:

Good call Mat. However the website left me wondering what is included in the kit. The C.V. joint complete? The new slip driveshaft assembly? The gear drive for the speedo? Just wondering.

However Muddyjeep, there may be guys out there who still have their stock one after they did their own conversion.

The AA SYE comes complete with a gear drive for the speedo. It's got a new tail housing for the NP231 as does the "extra short" one, but the AA one isn't quite as short. It has everything you need to get rid of the slip yoke. The link I showed you also includes a CV (double cardian) type shaft. I ordered mine a couple weeks ago, but won't be putting it on until some time next year.

You'll also want to get upper adjustable control arms so you can adjust your pinion angle. The pinion angle is important because with a regular shaft, you want the pinion angle to be parallel to the transfer case's output shaft, and the U-Joints will offset each other's vibrations as long as your operating angle is within about 13 degrees (I think...). With a CV type shaft you need to have the pinion angle parallel with the shaft itself and the CV portion will take the angle needed from the output shaft...

Most people do the SYE kits to eliminate driveline vibes when lifting their Jeep too high, but you might want to do it because all SYE kits (that I know of... other than a hack-n-tap) have a much stronger output shaft.

EDIT: Another reason you might want to choose this SYE/CV combo is that there's tons of information online about how to install it yourself:
          http://www.4x4xplor.com/SYE-CV.html
          and even a video:

You might be OK with one from a kit, like the one I posted from Northridge4x4. Give David a call. His might work with a stock setup. I'm not sure how much the slip joint in the shaft moves, but it might fit a stock height Jeep. I'm hoping it'll fit my budget boost with D35, D44 next year (shorter driveshaft as the D44's pinion is longer), and then OME lift after that for my (hopefully) final height!

has anyone here actually broken an output shaft?
I have been running mine for years and breaking everything BUT the output shaft I hack and tapped 5 years ago....and thats with a 4-1 kit.
It's not what you have. it's what you do with what you have.

As I stated before, call David at northridge4x4. He's a very friendly guy and should know weather the shaft from the kit will fit your stock height jeep. Here, I'll even post the phone number for you:

I agree with Materdaddy. David is very knowledgable and helpful. Or you could call Tom Woods direct http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html They treated me very well also. I am pretty sure you you can run an SYE at stock height but either of these 2 sources can tell you for sure and what you'll need to do it.

I'm pretty sure you should'nt run an SYE without a lift. Even so because of the angle you'd probably have to lengthen the shaft when you do add a lift kit.
