  • I6 Engine Swap

I was wondering, how much work and money would it cost me to take the stock 4cyl out of my '91 wrangler and swap it with a stock I6 wrangler motor? Cause I've been looking around and the 4 banger probably just won't cut it on the trails.
    WTF Mate?

    depends what type of trails.

for rocks you could do a 4low or atlas plus add a klune and have plenty of torque.

for mud (yum) I'd skip straight to a stroker or V8. :2:

your in AL.. I think your smog laws a little to none... Go with a 350 tbi and a bigger tranny = If your handy say 3k
      4.0 swap say about 3k

If you are not handy expect to pay close to double.....Yes swaps can be done cheeper but at what cost...used questionable parts that may die in the futre or just do it once!

Go with a Stroker. Check out www.hescosc.com about $4,000 but it will definently rock.

Well...for now I just wanna look at the Chrysler I6. I want a 4.0L high output motor, cause, yeah...bama you can get away with anything. Out of all 50 states alabama I believe is the only one where you can legally drive without shoes on. But getting back on subject. I'm new to Jeeps, so you're gonna have to do a little explaining on motors. And yeah, I've got a father who has onwed MANY jeeps....renegade, '97 TJ, J20, and an '02 TJ APEX to name that ones I know of. And a bother who does motor swaps on various cars frequently. So I'm the new family member to cars, and I'm learning quickly (I think) but anyway, help me out. Tell what's good what's not. The 4 banger is not the best (Not the worst) but not the best. And I really am just looking for something that will pull some bigger tires, like 31" or so and generate some good torque to keep me moving on the trails (O.o I got a '98 S10 stuck once, and had to pull it out with an old Jeep Honcho...that was rather interesting)
          WTF Mate?

Like swbooking stated Hesco would be a good choice especially for you since there in Alabama also. They have mild to wild, stock crate motors to crazy V8 killer strokers and fuel systems. They actually built, designed, and supply Jeep with the Mopar mpi conversions. Their tech. assistance is great too just talk to Lee.

being that you have a 91, you have OBDI electronics. you cant have a motor newer than a 95 without there being a pain in the butt. this is what you do for a kick A$$ motor.

                  go to a junk yard

                  buy a 4.0 block 91-95
                  buy a 4.0 head 91-95(actually prefered)
                  buy a 71-80 cj crank

the rest you will have to buy new. email me for a list.

all the parts combined will equal about 1500.00. then you run the head and block to an engine shop, drop about 400.00 for machine work.
have them put it together for another 350.00 or do it yourself if your able.
you'll have a 4.0 that is 75hp stronger than a stock 4.0 with about 100 more lb of torque. its a bolt in over a regular 4.0 and will pass smog.

SO with that said, if you want to go from a 4cyl to a 6cyl, this is the BEST way to go!..

you can also buy a 4.7 stroker on ebay for around 2k, but it doesnt have premium parts and is averagely built.

Supercharge the 2.5L, it moves out ok.

BTW - you can drive w/o shoes in most states (CA included)

thats not a bad engine. understand when a rebuilder gives a warranty that if the motor in fact goes south you still have to pay freight to the builder, wait for the down time and then pay freight to get it back and then re-install again. its a PITA!. with that said, try to get a builder nearer rather than farther away. i like building it w/parts that are stronger rather than having a shop do a cookie cutter rebuild on 20 motors at once cutting costs to gain the most profit. to sell a rebuilt motor at 1200.00 is cutting some serious costs. they would probably hope to make at least 30% profit on the build, so whats that. 840.00 to build a motor their cost? i dont think so.

post up a pic of your jeep and tell us what exactly your trying to go for. if your just a whatever jeep and do fire road trails, stick with the 2.5 and just massage it a lil. if your an avid builder and enjoy 4+ trails, then yeah i think its time to switch it out. of course you probably have the ax5 tranny and that simply wont work with a 4.0 or a 4.6 or better. if you want it done right save the money and/or learn to do it yourself!

You guys have been a GREAT help. The jeep...well I probably won't be putting it to ungodly use, but I'd like it to be able to tackle a mudhole or two, and keep on truckin'. To you know, hit those gummy spots, and the motor bog out cause it just doesn't have enough power to pull me out of it. Ya know? I'm probably not gonna be doing anything worse than just plain, flat out, mud riding, the worst I'd be doing is tackling like a drained lake bed (With buddies with tow straps, winches, and bigger engines to pull my wittle jeep out of those spots that I get stuck in.) but, here where I live, rock climbing is a big thing, but it's normally left to the local pro-sponsored guys with bad-ass v8's and 6" lift kits with 36" tires or more...yeah. I saw a rock climb event one day, and went home deaf...MY GOD IT WAS LOUD...but beautiful as well. But seriously. I'd like to be able to tackle those offroad trails, that aren't so difficult that you'd go in and never return, but still challenging enough to have a blast going back there.

remember that the old school jeeps had 4 bangers, were light as heck and were geared to the max. keep your jeep at 33's or under and just gear the heck out of it and you'll be ok. i dont now how worn your rig's engine is. i dont know your finances. you can get a good used engine from a yard for about 900.00. you can get a good used ax 15 tranny from a yard for about the same price. not sure about your motor mounts. do a google search. im sure that a million jeepers have done the 2.5 to 4.0 conversion. good luck.

BTW if you were local, im selling my 97 4.0 complete minus oil pan, and timing cover with 114k miles for 750.00 as soon as my stoker is done. superbly maintained and still runs strong. i just want better.........
