What Gears??

I need your opinions. I am going to lift my new jeep soon and will be running 35's. I want to keep the same highway speeds I'm doing now around 65mph at 2500rpm. I've checked all the gear ratio calculators and charts and I've come up with 4.56 gear would be good. What do you guys run or recommend and what speeds and rpm are you running?

My Jeep now has 31" tires, 4.11 gears and a 6 speed trans with overdrive with the 4.0. I'm not worried about offroad because its has a 4to1 t/case.

I went with 4.56's and now I wish I went with the deeper gears.

X2 When the 4.88 first came out I was concerned about the tiny pinion, is that 6 teeth?!? However, they seem no less relaible than the 4.56. With a manual you want all the gear you can get.

Why do you wish you went with 4.88's and how are 4.56's on the highway?

I have a 4to1 t/case so I feel that my ratios are good offroad. I want to keep the feel the same as stock just with bigger tires. I talked to 4XINTJ this weekend he has 35's and 4.88's and does 65mph at 3000rpm. I do 80mph at 3000rpm

5th gear at 60 mph I am at 2000 rpm

4.88 I have 37" and it almost feals like it needs more gear!

35" would be perfect with 4.88 in my opnion!

48's are too low for the an Auto and 35's. Stay with the 4:56's.

Chris runs 35's, auto and 48's and at 65 is running at least at 3000 rpms. I have 4:56's and 33's and run around 2200 rpms at 65. When I followed him to Moab in my Jeep, we had to keep it under 60-65 as his Jeep was screaming at anything over.

Id suggest you test drive someones Jeep to see if its acceptable to you before committing to anything.

I really loved the way the Jeep had that get up and go off the line with the 4.56's and 33's. On the high way if was nice too. It's supposedly back to nearly stock gearing with 4.56's and 35's but I miss the pepp off the line and In 5th gear with the cruise on I think the 4.88's would do a little better on hills.

true, if you don't like downshifting on hills the 4.88s would be better.

On long highway trips I like to put her in cruise and just roll. I would also like a little lower in the old crawl ratio.

Chris' auto has a 1:1 final output so 4:56's would work a little better on the hiway. They're great for the 33's with a stick. 5th gear is .8:1 or so, 4th is 1:1 final.

With the new auto with overdrive trans the final is .69:1 (possibly .74:1) so the lower gears work better all the way around. Plus, the rubicon has the 4:1 TC built in. It's well documented that 4: 88's are the defacto gearing for a Rubicon with 35" tires.

I get by with 4:10's with the 3 speed auto but 4:56's would work a little better. It's a little boggy in mid-range.
