engines have ran for atleast 60 years with points,a coil and a plain old mechanical distributor, no reason why this one doesn't.
You got to figure out what is wrong, just throwing parts at it is costly and the process of fixing something that way is arbitrary at best Neil

I agree with art on that one. Fix the problem first. Do the points look bad ? how about the set you took out. If they are pited or melted that is not a good thing. Somtimes you can renew them with sand paper instead of buying a new set, try it out.

Folks, IF a points type ing. was all that great, why hasn't any car maker used them in 25+ yrs.
They were a well known problem area.
SWAG: I'm starting to feel that the OP is having an ele. supply issue(can't make enough)too.
His fan isn't doing the job either.
Sure would like to get a "hands-on" to be sure.

I have changed them several times. The last time was before I put in the resistor and the were blue on the tip by the contact, I am guessing from the high voltage of no resistor. I am right now in the process of putting together a new drive train 350 tbi hei, sm420, d300. Just need to keep this one alive long enough to get the other one built and installed.

FWIW... I have a '73 FJ-40 with the Petronics conversion installed 105,000 miles ago. Other than the usual plugs, wires and cap "tune-up" no more issues with the timing since. Now the 38 yr. old wiring harness, well....

Yea pertronics makes a great product. Back when I was an apprentice we used to install them on all our older heavy duty fleet trucks.

                    • If in fact the contacts on the points are blue they are burnt due to AMPS not the volts......
What is the mfd of your condenser?
Go to a pointless dizzy and you should be GTG.

                      • I am not sure about the condenser it is the stock autozone replacement. I should have the pertronics installed this weekend. I will post what happens then. Hope this fixes it. I only need it to run long enough for me to build a 350 to replace the 302.

                              • Napa sells good parts and china junk too just like autozone. I bought a ball joint from autozone and it was a reboxed spicer. Napa had the same ball joint made in china for more money so go figure it pays to shop around.
