A "609" is a hybrid front differential using a Ford type third member with Dana 60 type inner and outer knuckles. Most use a True Hi Nine third member, which is much stronger than the Ford unit, It's made of nodular iron, has an extra bearing support at the pinion and two thrust adjustments. The 9" will typically have one more tooth engagement between the pinion and ring gear then a Dana 60. A True Hi Nine will provide the most driveshaft height. You can use any type of knuckle (typically cast) appropriate for a Dana 60. Or you can use steel knuckles like the spidertrax. They're available in 35 or 40 spline shafts.

Actually now that I have some dana 60's sitting in the garage the pumkins aren't really all that much bigger than a dana 44 the pumkin is 2" bigger overall. 1" higher and 1" lower on the bottom. Not anywhere near as bad as I thought

But that 1" eats up the clearance of going from 35" tires to 37,
so you need to go to bigger tires(40's)to gain more clearance.

But once you start going to 40's, you are eliminating allot of trails , as a 40 tire makes it so much easier on most obstacles and trails. Only place you might really want to go and play is in JV. You need allot of lift to clear 40's,,,,, or you want to start cutting sheet metal.

All in all, a TJ, XJ or YJ with either a Dana 30HP or 44 in Front and a Dana44 or Ford 8.8 or Ford 9" in the back on 35's with chromemoly shafts all around and somewhere between 3-5" lift makes for a very nice 4 wheeler that can do most trails in our environs. The bigger stuff is more or less for JV and a few other trails outside of that it's overkill

I agree, but would add 300M U-joints. Plenty of axles are taken out due to a broken U-joint.
