  • Rear end went CABOOM!

Well i was being taunted by a friend that his 05 VW Turbo diesel jetta was fasted than my jeep.
After about an hour of him taunting me i decided to run him to shut him up.
When i launched i noticed a slight pop. When I cherped 2nd, another pop.
After that i didnt hear anything.
Now i did beat him in about a 1/8 mile race by about 4 car's.
When i was heading home at the end of the night which is about 12 mile's i didnt hear any noise from the rear end at all.
BUT when i pulled into my complex i heared a pop, pop, BANG!
Then i felt the slip but i made it to my driveway.
    I had a question.
    I used to own a 05 ranger edge with the 8.8 4.10.
I have heared many good thing's about these axle's.
If i were to find one at a wrecking yard about how much would it be and how difficult is the install. Do the perch's match up? same U-Joint's?
What is needed to do this?
Also should i change out the 30 or keep it?
I am kind of low on cash right now so the cheaper the better!
    Also i am running 33 12.50-15 TSL's.

      Hey there IPSteeler,
I too am looking to swap out my "turdy" five and have done some research on going to an 8.8 First off you will have to weld new perch's and shock mounts. The U-Joint are not the same but you can pull the yoke/ flange off of a areostar and they say that will work with the U'Joints on the jeep. I have found a complete rear end at pick a part for 150.00 and you go on a day they have a half off sale even better. 1995 to i belive 1998 are disk brakes and them from there you can still build it up more. Well I hope this help you out ant I have attached a like with some good info.

        Thanx for the info.
But on to the damage's on the dana35 (turdy5)
Well the top and bottom spider's blew 3 teeth on each.
I do need my jeep by this friday because of a wheeling trip i am going on.
I am going to replace them for now and that 8.8 look's promising.
So is the front 30 goos to keep?
I dont plan on going crazy because this is my DD.
I just plan on putting a lockright in the front and calling it good.

I had the same problem with mine and I went with a power track locker. From what I have heard the dana 30 will keep you going so you should be fine.
P.S. If you get an 8.8 make sure its the same gearing and you should be fine.

            Try this...
            http://www.mountainoffroad.com/more.htm

These guys sell an 8.8 kit(perches, shock mounts, u-bolts, and plates), e-brake cables, and flange yoke. I picked up shock extensions too but these are optional. You will need access to a BIG welder. These parts are 1/4" thick steel. My MIG couldn't cut it so I had to borrow a 220v ARC welder.

You will be VERY happy you did this swap. The feeling is night and day compared to that 35. It actually feels strong when you accelerate or hit bumps. This is probably your best opportunity to change your gearing if you're running anything less than a 4.10. 4.10 Exploder rear ends with disk brakes and LSD are VERY common.

              One more question.
              I found a D44 out of a XJ.
What is needed to fit the D44?
              Also does $200 sound right?

www.stu-offroad.com is a helpful site. I wound-up with about $800 in a stock 8.8 with a drive shaft and gears and locker., you'd be looking at around $1500 or so.

The 35 is going to be going to a scrap yard as soon as it is out!
Well i went to go pick up that D44 about 30 min ago and he sold it. He said he was going to save it for me but i guess not.
Well when they say bad things happen for a reason i think that is true.
I got a call from a friend and he told me he is scraping a ranger with a 8.8 and if i want it i can just have it!
I have a feeling this will be a cheap buildup!

Don't do it. Most likely, it has drum brakes, it's an open diff and it's 27 spline. I believe it is a bit stronger than the 35, but nowhere near as strong as an Explorer axle. It's a lot of effort for something that's only a little better.

Ya i know it is a bit weaker than a 31 spline but i had a 05 ranger with a 8.8 27 spline and i was running 35's with a spool and never had a problem.
The YJ will be only running 33's.
I will look around for that 8.8 31 spline but if i cant find one around here that is what i will have to resort to.
Also i am going to weld up the spider's on the 35 to get me by untill then.
It will suck but you have to do what you have to do.

Hey, if you didn't bust the carrier in that 35, 4 wheel parts has a mini-spool that's pretty cheap. It was something like $80 I think. Probably doesn't matter much since you're not saving that 35. Check with whoever you're going to buy your new axle from to see if welding the spiders will negate your ability to turn in a rebuildable core. Mine was worth $100.

Edit- Wait... Bro-deal on the axle. Nevermind.
