Well at least doing it under the Jeep, but it wont be a problem if i sit right in front of the diff. One might think that taking out the whole mess is a big deal, but after you do it once, its actually easy & to me a lot easie than crawling around on a creeper under the Jeep. But I do suppose having a garage type lift in your back yard would be a bit of help. Hmm maybe you can get your buddies to help with that while your at it. I totally agree with Snoopy. Taking the axle out sounds like a lot of extra work but it's the only way I'll do it. Setting gears is a detail-oriented process and the easier it is to access the diff and remove/install the carrier the more likely you are to do it right. I made a stand that holds any axle housing solidly and is adjustable for hight. I also made a housing spreader for the Spicer (Dana) axle housings. It makes it a whole lot easier to get the shimming correct. You certainly don't have to take the axle out of the vehicle, it's just a personal preference. I've built over 200 rear ends since the 70's, racing and off road. I found I like this method the best. Remember the carpenters credo; measure twice, cut once. I check all clearances three times. Anal? Hell yes...

Do you have any pictures of that? Sounds interesting. I'm trying to picture what a housing spreader would look like and how it would be used during the install

I have pics somewhere of when I did my regear. I'll see if I can find them. Here is a link to a site that sells them. There's a pitcure of it installed on the housing.

$600.00 screw that! I made one a lonnnnng time ago when I building race axles. Had it since the late 70's and it still works great.

Not sure where you get that from. D30s can take up to 5:38s. The only issue I know of is that numerically lower than 3:73 requires a different housing, and the carrier will have to be replaced to accomodate Ring gears larger than 3:73 or 3:91.

I'm curious where you guys heard this thing about a D30 having issues with ring gears in the 5's.

the lower the gear set the weaker it gets and with a small ring gear like the 30 7.5 inch im running 4.88s on a hp 30 no problems but its still weaker than 4.10 less tooth contact

well as the gears get lower the R&P get weaker and the d30 is already so weak. if your running tires that need the 5's then they are too big and will break the 5's lol

Well, that's a nice theory but since you can't get lower than 4.88s on the D30, it's not really relevant, is it? nwoods has a Rubi and can go lower than 4.88s.

Now, are the 5.13s smaller? Yes. Are the 5.13s weaker? Maybe, but being worried about 5.13 gears doesn’t make sense, especially when running Big Bear, Calico, Anza, etc… I would suspect that this rather stems from reading all these internet myths. I know a few folks running 5.13s and 35s in their Rubis, and they have had no problems to speak of.

Of course, anything is possible, but you can also fairly easily blow 3.73s by driving like an idiot.

You can if you own a JK. There are no 5.13s available for the TJ D30.
