• Calico B&B

Hi all,
My wife and I need some feedback on a proposed business we are looking at starting up in Calico. If you could, let us know what you think and possibly any input on what you would like to see.
We are proposing to the County of San Bernardino to open a Bed and Breakfast right in Calico at one of the existing buildings. We are hoping to have it approved and possibly open it by mid yr this yr. Rates would be affordable as we are thinking of the economic recession. The B&B would be a nightly rate with a country style breakfast for each night of stay. There will also possibly be outdoor bar-b-que areas for the guest to do their own lunches and or dinners. The B&B would be decorated in the 1890's decor, with the same ol' western hospitality you would have found back in the Calico hay days.
So please, give us some feedback on this idea. It will be much apreciated

I'm sure you've already taken this into consideration, but Calico is ALMOST literally a ghost town in the hotter months. It just gets too hot outside to do much tourism or offroad. Would many find it appealing during the "season"? I think they would.

You'd have to be competitive with the motel six and others just up the road in Barstow also.

That sounds VERY cool.

Is the existing hotel available? Though, Ive heard its haunted, which may lead to its ambiance.

Will the county subsidize any of it? Is it going to be in the regional park?

Hey Tam,
In answer to your questions, no, Hanks Hotel isn't available, it is currently leased by someone selling art, although, its been leased for several months and we have yet to see it open. It would be better served as a B&B although the county probably wouldn't go for it because of the guest being within the Calico Main st after business hours. We did consider it as one of our options though. Not sure about the county subsidizing, and yes the proposed B&B will be inside the regional parks boundaries. We are proposing 2 locations, one to open within the next 6 months, and a second location to open within the next yr or so. Once the second location is ready, a choice will be made to continue opperating the first one also.
And yes, Hanks Hotel is said to be haunted. I have been inside it as my wife and I had a reception in it following our renewing of our vows at the Calico School House

We can promise you a pillow, a warm place to stay in the winter, a great breakfast in the morning, and the desire to come back again. How's that for hospitality? We look forward to seeing you there.
Thank you for your thoughts

See, this is what has made America the great country we are, people willing to step out and take a chance. All the best to you both in your venture.

My only suggestion would be to send A LOT of money advertising. You must be creative there. You need to figure out your target group and how to reach them. Like travel magazines and travel agencies.

Also you should consider hiring a professional website builder and put together a beautiful site set up so you'll get the hits. You not only want to reach American guests but Asian & Europian as well.

Here's to your success! IDTT!!

Yes. Google Calico and make sure you are on every sight that comes up. My wife and I are always more willing to spend our money on small family owned business then large chains. I am sure we would be there in the winter but in the summer we will probably be in big bear.

Sounds great. We live an easy 45 minutes from Calico but often take the motorhome and stay a night or two. Would you be inside the park entrance so people would have to pay admission just to stay there or outside like the bunkhouse where NAXJA stay often?

Yes Roger, this is what America is made of, just alot of folks have lost perspective and ambition. Thank you for your suggestions. We have looked into a profesional to build our website, and also might be looking at a bill board sign out at the hwy. Not sure if the county will approve that or not. Thank you for the support.

Jeep noobie: Thank you for your thoughts and support. We will look forward to seeing you once it's open.

Gregg, the first B&B will be inside the park, but we will try to negotiate with the park that the B&B stay includes park entrance. If all goes well, we will open the second B&B outside the park like the bunkhouse. Once the second one is open, we will decide on keeping them both up and running.

I think it is a good idea. When we stay in the RV park we have enjoyed going up into the "town" for dinner and it is a really nice place when it is kind of empty and quiet. I would think folks would enjoy strolling the street off hours.

my wife the historian that she is, wants to add a candle light historical walk through town after hours if the park allows her to. Much like the the famous Ghost Walk, this would be the history side of Calico instead. Of course, at Halloween, it would have to include the ghost of Calico too.
Thanks Gregg for the comments

PDW,
sorry, but probably wont be ready till right before summer. Knowing the low tourist level in summer at Calico, this will be a slow start till fall hits. Keep a watch on MJR, we will keep updates on when it will be open.
