  • Looking for maps, books, etc.

Hi everyone, new guy here. This is the greatest Jeep forum yet.
I'm trying to find detailed info on all the difficult trails within Stoddard Valley. I would also like the same for the Hammers. Books recommendations would be great. Maps work too. I've got the "Guide to Southern California backroads and 4-wheel drive trails" and it only mentions Achy-Breaky in Stoddard Valley and I think Jackhammer. Thanks in advance.

Check out our first attempt at a maps page.

Every time we meet up with newbies with books on the trails, they are always lost. IMO, your best bet is to travel with people that already know the route.

      Sarah,

I dont disagree with your general comment on books, they do not replace experience, but they still can give someone new to the area (like me), an overall description of trails and locations.

Can anyone share some book like resources for trails in the northern california area? There are several listed on Amazon, but would place great value in personal recommendations. thanks.

        I really like this book:

I guess Charles Wells does a good job writing books. I like how he gives directions for us non GPS users. Instead of waypoints, he will say where to turn off the road, and reset your odometer. Then at certain mile markers he will point thing out and tell you where to turn if needed, etc. Good book!

Here is the norcal version for grub:
          http://www.amazon.com/Northern-Calif...377789-2771865

We have the socal one and it does a good job of pointing out specific areas, but after that IMHO you're on your own For the most part it will be ok, as trails are neatly marked. At Calico or a place where there are alot of turnoffs and unmarked sections of trail, this is where we've run into people with this book in hand who were pretty lost and confused.

            Maps

^ These guys were giving away maps at the Off Road Expo in Pomona this year. A while ago you could order the maps and it only cost the $1 per map for the shipping. Now they are asking for $3 each, plus the $1. Seem to be decent maps.

I am only looking for books to learn what trails exist and where they are. I wouldn't rely on them to get me around. I'm just trying to find new places to wheel. Once I find out where they are, I'll get maps specific to the area.
