  • Night Run 6/10 - Butler Peak and Gold Mountain

Full moon this weekend. I think it would be fun to do a night run on Saturday night. Any suggestions?

Just make sure you do it at night!

I might be up for this, depending on which trail you run...

With the views it offers Gold Mountain might be nice. Follow that up with a run up to Butler Peak (if it's open)...

Grim, Butler _should_ be open - the official "lookout season" starts in May. I'll ask...

As of Friday, May26th, it was still closed due to snow on the road (at least according to rep's at the Discovery Center). With the hot weather we have had lately I would expect that to be changing real soon...

I think i will be going. You plan on camping, or just going up for a nighter and then shooting back down the mountian?

Depending on where we wheel, I will probably set up camp or get a room so I won't have to drive home late at night. We could even do a day run as well as the night run.

                      Trail status

I called the Big Bear district ranger station to ask about the Butler Peak trail (2N13 and 2N13C). The SBNF web site still lists it as closed, but the ranger station said that it reopened on June 2. I'd like to run Butler Peak first, then run Gold Mountain (3N69) from south to north. I've never been to Butler Peak but I understand that the trail is easier and running it first will give us more moonlight when we run Gold Mountain. On Saturday, moonrise is 7:30 pm and sunset is at 7:58 pm. Let's meet at the Fawnskin fire station at 7:00 pm on Saturday, and depart for Butler Peak at 7:30 pm so we can watch the sunset. Channel 4. PM me if you want my cell phone.

Does anyone want to run White Mountain (3N17) on Saturday afternoon? Any suggestions on where to set up camp on Saturday night?

(These trails should be OK for stock vehicles; I ran Gold Mountain and White Mountain last year in a stock TJ; there are bypasses for the more difficult sections)

Sounds all good by me. White mountain sounds good. I have never ran it so that will be fun.

Russ, Sounds like a great run. I can't go, I have to do some maintenance (ask anyone that was on the Dishpan run with me last Sunday, squealing brakes driving everyone nuts)! But I'll be with you guys in spirit. Of course I'll just check out your photos/trail report when you post. Ride safe and enjoy...
