  • Trail Report: Rubicon Trail, July 27-30, 2015

On Sunday evening, July 26, Chris (Dukes69) and Tammy Fields (JeepGal), their two youngest children, Jordan and Steven, Mat (Materdaddy) and Tiffany Mrosko (Matermomma), Jason Williams (Jason), and I met in Placerville, CA. We proceeded to Loon Lake and set up camp. Our group consisted of four Jeeps, six adults, two children and three dogs.

    We awoke to bright sunshine.

The water level in Loon Lake was extremely low:

We crossed the Gatekeeper and the Granite Bowl. Chris and Tammy are leading, followed by Mat and Tiff, then Jason.

We stopped for lunch at Little Sluice, took a short hike to Spider Lake, then continued to Buck Island Lake:

We set up camp at Buck Island Lake and had time to relax before preparing dinner.

On Tuesday morning, we broke camp and headed to Rubicon Springs.

We arrived early in the afternoon and set up camp on the granite slabs next to the river.

On Wednesday, Jason left to spend the night at Lake Tahoe while the rest of us went for a hike to the soda spring and the cabins.

On Thursday, we broke camp and left Rubicon Springs shortly after 8 am. We wanted to get up Cadillac Hill early because a large number of Jeeps was expected to arrive from Lake Tahoe that day to prepare for the Jeep Jamboree. We got to the Observation Point shortly after 9 am and to the Tahoma staging area at about 10:30 am. After airing up, Mat and Tiff headed to Mammoth, Chris, Tam, Jordan and Steve headed back to Coloma where they left their pickup truck, and I headed to Coloroado.

Nice report and great trip. Too bad that I am stuck on jack stands!

Where are the cabins and Soda Spring? This is new for me.

                    Mike,

The soda spring is across the trail and about 100 yds from the Rubicon Springs campground host's cabin. The Mansion and the Stone Cabin are about a half-mile southeast along a two-track trail that starts near the campground host's cabin.

                        Brett,

As we were leaving Buck Island Lake, I made sure to show everyone the ledge where you had so much "fun" in 2014.....

I couldn't find any pictures of you actually getting over that obstacle but I know that you finally made it because I saw you later that day in Rubicon Springs.

                        Russ
