I think you guys misunderstand what I'm saying here. No one has accused anyone at MJR of cutting illegal trails. The forum was linked to a email about cutting illegal trails. I'm getting it all sorted out. Just relax, have a beer or two and I'll let you know what I find.

Its a trap. they want you to drive up there to "help close trails" meanwhile they will be waiting with high powered zoom lenses focussing on our MJR stickers and license plates to catch us on undeveloped trails.
To use this as evidence against us.

been watching too much Walker Texas Ranger

Let me know when I can help. I have some plans at the end of July but I should be able to get away for a day.

Sawmill Trail 7S05 ends at the Charcoal Kiln. The road past the kiln is within the Santa Rosa Wilderness designated in 1984.

It is not a loop. It has not been a loop in a long time. But hey I read it on the internet that it is a loop so it must be true.

I have attached three maps which show the area around the Sawmill trail. These three maps show how the route has evolved as a result of the Forest Service Route Designation process:
                  1. SBNF 2005 Map. This map printed in 2005 shows the trail as a loop and designates it as 7S05.
                  2. SBNF Web site map (this is the map that currently appears on the SBNF website). The trail is designated as 7S01. Part is shown as being a motorized trail and part is a hiking trail. It is no longer a loop, but the hiking trail portion of the route connects with 7S02 (the Santa Rosa Truck Trail).
--- This map matches the SBNF map printed in 2007
--- This map matches the trail report that Doug (FishPOET) posted in 2011. See the link to the trail report in Doug's earlier post
                  3. SBNF MVUM. This is an excerpt from the current MVUM. It shows 7S05 as a short spur leading to the Sawmill trailhead. The portion of the trail that runs along the wilderness boundary does not appear on the MVUM and therefore is no longer authorized for motorized travel. IIRC, the MVUM took effect at the end of 2011, so the run in 2012 that was posted in sdoffroad.blogspot.com was on an unauthorized route.

The MVUM does not show hiking trails, but I would infer that the trail that once was known as 7S05/7S01 (motorized) is now designated as 5E03 (a hiking trail), and that the picture of the junction of 5E03 and 5E01 that Doug just posted was taken at a point just below the letter "A" in "TH SAWMILL" in the second map.

The MVUM contains quite a few errors that are supposed to be corrected with each subsequent revision. I have been told 7S01 will be corrected on the new version to correctly show what I had posted on the map in 2011.

Thanks Doug, it's good to hear it will be a legal trail again. Doug maybe you can find this out. Greg said a couple of years ago about making Lighting Ridge legal again.

To the best of my knowledge Lightning Gulch Ridge is in the proposed Sugarloaf Wilderness and if the wilderness is approved it will be lost to us all forever.

Yep, I was there too. I don't recall seeing any wilderness boundary markers or non-designated trails, so I'm interested in seeing this taken care of. I might be able to volunteer for any work that needs to be done up there.

I'm positive there weren't any such signs. I have never seen any on that route, and I've always got my eye out for 'em. I was turned onto the route we took by other jeepers. People have been utilizing it for many, many years. Two signs could probably eliminate any problems or confusion.

On another note, I'd be happy to help too if someone has an extra seat I could meet you in the parking lot near the "Sawmill Trailhead" sign. Haven't been up there in a long time, so it would be nice to take in the view again.
