  • Wheeling near Lake Cachuma?

Anything in that area? - fire roads will do. Not looking for anything aggressive - just want to get a bit of "stick time" in the YJ.

On top of the San Ynez mountains between Lake Cachuma and the ocean is West Camino Cielo (Sky Road), which has maybe ten miles of dirt with an awesome veiw, as you are level with the top of the Channel Islands, looking west, over the ocean, and to the east, the San Rafael Wilderness, looking over Cachuma, and the San Ynez valley
If you run it east to west, you will come out on Refugio road at it's summit where it turns into the old dirt stagecoach road down to Sovang.
It makes a good loop from Cachuma, take 154 towards Santa Barbara, and West Camino Cielo crosses 154 just over the summit of San Marcos Pass.
Turn right on it and its tight and narrow but paved for the first couple of miles through a mountain top comunity till you reach Lizard Mouth, the scene of the imfamous Markowitz murder.
Here it turns to dirt, on the top of the mountains, to the comunication towers, in the distance, with only one rut to line up over (keeps the cars out) near the end.
There are no legal turn offs till you get to Refugio, just above Ronald Regan's old ranch.
Turn right here, around the "Road Not Maintianed" signs, where it turns to dirt for a few miles down to the valley floor, to the traffic light on the 246 between Solvang and the Chumash Casino.
Turn right on the 246 about four miles to the 154, turn right and you'll be back at the Cachuma entrance in ten, fifteen minutes. Look for the pack of fifty or so deer in the green fields after Lucas Creek where the 154 widens for a passing lane.

There's more easy stuff around, but not as scenic untill Spring.
Shoot me an e-mail when your in the neighborhood.

      Thanks, Robert!

Found a writeup on this (and the Agua Caliente Springs trail to the east) in my copy of Charles Wells book (which I had reviewed for him - but only the San Bernardino section).

Should be out that way the weekend of 07 Aug.

And thanks again. Ran across the road on Saturday, beautiful weather - several spots where Cachuma was visable off the right side of the ridge, Pacifis off the left.

Spent the night in Buellton, hit Cold Springs Tavern on the way out - we had a blast!
