Sunday has been a great day. It was beautiful in the Inland Empire and even better in the Cajon Pass. We were planning to run some powerline roads with RAT but things didn't work out. When we got the call that they were not going to make it, my wife told me that she would like to go anyway. I love my wife!
Ha! So that means that she should drive! I got to take pics. Here are some of the ones that I like:
2n89 (A forest road that follows the RR tracks):
We found Lost Lake:
So I guess that they need to rename it now.
We followed 2N89 further and found some great views:
We took a cross-over trail to the Cleghorn Road exit that I really like:
From there we took several roads that took us east next to the Santa Fe RR track. There were some killer views of the snow covered mountains:
We eventually found this interesting hilltop:
This turned out to be Hill 582:
Someone is putting a crazy amount of effort into making this a great place to relax and watch the trains in the Pass:
The drop down from Hill 582 is not for the weak:
We got to see some trains before we were too far away:
We followed some fun hill climbs out of the area and found ourselves at a great overlook of the Summit Valley:
We then followed the tracks back south towards the 138. We found an interesting train maintenance vehicle. This seems to be how they maintain the tracks:
Just as we were going to pass over the tracks and head down the pass, we found this interesting memorial:
When we got near the 138, we had to wait for a train to pass:
This close to the Silverwood Grill was just too tempting, so we had dinner there.
Afterwards, we headed down the 138 to I-15 which was packed with Sunday traffic! So we by-passed the highway and took 2N89 southwards to the crossing that we took earlier in the day:
All the roads were mild for the most part, but what an amazing day! The Cajon Pass has some great things to discover -- even if you never shift into 4WLow.
