  • Trail Report: West Calico Mines

We took a trip out to Calico today to check out some of the mine sites on the west end of the area.

We found a lot of nice sites with some structure and artifacts still in tact. It was a nice and cool day out there. We exited through Doran canyon after looking around the Bismark mine. Doran has 'improved" since the last time I went through.

    Slideshow.

The dates are from the 50's

Ore cart rails are still inside

    Great trail

We've explored mostly the middle and east areas of the Calico mountains. This was my first time on the west end. Lots of neat stuff still there.
It took a little time though from Wall St to the Bismark mine.......there's a whole new route now.

I know there's a ton of stuff I haven't seen out there still. Seems during the summer, when nobody else can handle the heat, I end up playing on Mliler/Yellow Jacket and surrounding areas/trails..111,112,113 etc..now that it's flipping freezing for me, my friends want to go to BB and Calico, because the weather is "ideal" for them. (Freezing for me, but I'll suck it up, tent and all.) I'm guessing for the next few months, I'll be going to Calico a lot. Quite the drive for me, but well worth it. So, if you're ever going, let me know! I'd like to know the area like the back of my hand eventually I need to get onboard with some sort of GPS too. I'm just lolly-gaggin around with it b/c I'm not a "tecky" person.

The best way to learn an area is to have a good map, then choose a different route each time you go into the area. Below is a link to a pretty good map of the trails at Calico.

Hear ya... problem is getting people to go. Wheelin alone is never a good idea.

                    Mike,

Great mine pictures. I hope to get one more trip to explore Calico before I move next month. Rather green and wet everywhere I look here in Georgia.

Hey Mike nice pictures! I think I recognize all those mines. Did the one with the ladder/rails going down still have plastic bags filled with dirt all around in the mine? I saw that a few years ago and didnt know is someone was taking samples in hopes to open the mine again. It was a bunch of clear plastic bags marked with black marker if I remember right.

hope to get out on a run with you again soon!
