Trail Discussion: Dishpan & Holcomb Creek w/trailer?

Im just wondering if these two trails are doable with an xj 3" Lift limited slip front and rear and sliders pulling a truckbed like trailer with more clearence than the jeep. hauling probably about 600-800lbs of gear. I have yet to wheel these two trails in the mountains so i have no clue how they are. Im a pretty good driver in rough conditions, just wanna reasure myself. any input would be appreciated.

I know that several people have drug trailers through Holcomb Creek without issue. And although I've run Dishpan, I don't know how a trailer would do on that trail. Have fun.

yeah i figured holcomb creek would be ok being as they used trailers to haul loads of rocks to fix the trail. but like you idk how dishpan would be.

Depending on which direction you run and the traction your vehicle has, there may be a couple of tough spots.

The trailer was loaded with probably a ton of rocks, so double your trailer's weight, and the trail has certainly changed since then.

hey matterdaddy what kind of hitch did you use on ur trailer?

I've towed my trailer over the Rubicon, Dusy as well as hualing load's of rock on Holcome for AAT work. The only issues I have are backing up while in rock's and being pushed down hill with a load of rock in it (AAT work). My normal "trail" load is only a couple hundred pounds. If I hang up the axle, it's still light enough to drag over it. My hitch of choice is a pintle. If you dont like the banging noise from it, slide a chunk of old radiator hose over it.

zoobie, that sounds like fun! did you have any problems with the hitch binding on you during articulation sections?

oh another question i have is would it be better to air down the trailer too or just run full pressure?

No binding and if I'm just doing a dirt road trip I can change to a regular ball mount hitch. Their smoother but limit articulation.
Some people air down to limit bouncing. I never have but, every time I take it out I think about putting shocks on it.

Sorry, I'm the red jeep. I just have a regular 2" receiver hitch. The one with the trailer is Scott. He's registered here under the handle scottymoto.

@ Zoobie, yah ive thought about putting shocks on mine too, all the manufacturers of the offroad trailers put them on, but ill see how the first run with it on trails go, ill convert mine to a pintle before the run, i know i definantly dont wanna run with a ball hitch.

I honestly dont see a point of running any trails in Big Bear with a trailer. Youre just opening yourself up to break.

Long one way trails, like Rubicon and Dusy would make sense.

im thinkin of taking the trailer cuz we are running cleghorn, pilot rock, miller, dishpan springs, holcomb creek, john bull, and gold mountain, over a period of 3 days and i dont plan on heading to town between trails. n being with 3 people worth of gear/food/drinks i dont like loading down my cherokee n wheeling with it, plus i figured it would be a good test run for any future runs that are further from home.
(p.s. The trailer will be left at camp for john bull, and gold mountain)

When I took mine out, it was for the same reason. Too many passengers, not enough storage space. With the trailer I was able to bring a few creature comforts also. Now it's just the wife and I so the trailer will only go for trekking distances without having to worry about fuel.
Like I stated earlier, the biggest issues are rocks and backing up. I have the tongue heavy for the street and center the load more on trails. That combo works best for me. If you have time, put a section of old hose over the hitch (not the circle part). Try to cover it as much as you can. That pintel banging around drives me nut's. I wish someone made something for it.

that was me hauling the trailer in the picture and i used a 2 inch ball.the trail is is easier now on holcomb so that will be easy,just have some go ahead of you on dishpan for the two uphills incase you need a tug with all the wieght and you should be fine.the boys loaded the trailer up that day with some heavy rocks but my jeep did good.
