Hanmer Springs is a thermal resort town in the South Island of New Zealand. With four trucks from the Canterbury Jeep Club we headed off to Hanmer for a weekend of snow fun. Saturday saw us head over Jacks Pass with a light dusting of snow and around to Jollies Pass where there was a lot more snow which made for some very nice scenery and some challenging driving in parts for those with ATs on (me). At the top of a pylon track we set up the awning and had lunch in the still crisp air with light snow coming down.
Sunday we once again shot over Jacks Pass and headed for Lake Tennyson. By about the 800m elevation mark there was a decent covering of snow across the road. We got within about 1km of Lake Tennyson with everyone except Steve in his light soft top with 35s getting bogged down in the snow. About then a southerly came through with snow and so we decided to turn around and make our way back out rather than risk getting stranded at the lake. Back in Hanmer we had a quick coffee then we hit Pucker Park (a dedicated 4wd playground) for a play before heading back to home to Christchurch and ironically a lot more snow in town the next day (which is very rare). A great weekend and only a couple of hours drive from home
