  • Trail Discussion: Exploring Ord Mountain

I went out today with Scott & Lesa (avjeepfreek), Roger & LeAnne, and Chris & Melissa "Legs"
(chris142) to do some more exploring in the area of Ord Mountain. Dave (flatpoint) took me on my first trip to this area about 3 years ago. So much to see. Every trip I have seen new and different things. We met at the Valero in Lucerne and headed out to Camp Rock Road and then north to Harrod Road to air down. We headed north to the west side of Ord Mountain. We went up an old trail towards the top of the mountain. I stopped to explore and look for a cool rock house foundation and it's old chimney. Cool pieces of purple glass, square nails, and 100 year old cans that had both soldered sides and bottoms. Every one else went up to an old mine on the hill. We spent over an hour exploring this spot.

Next we took a trail to the "Desert Toilet". Must be a relic from a modern camper needing a remote camping site with a touch of home.

We next headed to Aztec Springs for a lunch break and more exploring. An old house slab there has 1917 carved in it.

I crawl in the Jeep but not into mines!!!!

This is a true "Gate Keeper"! How does he walk around with those???????

A truly great day spent with wonderful friends. 70 degree weather, awesome sunsets every time we went around a different hill. Thanks every one for the perfect day.

It was a great day hangin' out with great friends. The desert is sure green for this time of year. The recent rains and then the warm weather fooled the Mojave into thinking it's spring.

        Troy,

        It is filled with water.

A little info on Sweetwater Springs on the other side of the hill. The mining near the cinder block buiding is currently active, and there was a drill rig drilling a well at the site and several other pieces of equipment and a trailer. The trail coming in from the Radio Facility road on the east is locked up and has No Trespassing sings on it.

See this stuff while you can. With gold hovering around $1400 an ounce it wont take long to see dormant claims become active.

This is a killer photo! Nice shot:

Looks like a great trip. It makes you wonder how the Sweetwater Mine got it's name.
