  • Trail Discussion: Jacoby Canyon to Rattlesnake Canyon

Does anyone know if there is an all dirt route (except for a little of highway 38) that goes from Jacoby Canyon over to Rattlesnake Canyon?

Jacoby is the one that meets hwy 18 at the 6000ft sign isn't it? 3n03 is just 1/2 mile from there on 18. Or am I thinkin of something else?

So how about starting at the BB dump, go down jacoby to 18, go 1/2 mile to 3n03 and take that to rattlesnake or go the opposite direction starting from the bottom of Rattlesnake and going up?

At the bottom of Jacoby Canyon take a short pavement section to 3N03. Once on 3N03 you will pass cactus Flats Staging Area. Pit toilets are available. Continuing southeast on 3N03 through Lone Valley you will pass the Bighorn Sheep Wilderness Area on your left. Tip Top Mountain will be on your left at 2N90. Tip Top Mountain has mining artifacts and on top an old antenna tower. Just beyond Tip Top Mountain will be the Rose Mine area. Lots to explore in this area. Beyond the Rose Mine is Mineral Mountain on your left and Heartbreak Ridge on your right. North on Viscera Springs Rd headed for Rattlesnake Canyon.

Doug, this sounds like a great route to explore. How would you rate the difficulty of these trails?

            Thanks !!

I've done all these roads in a stock TJ. 4x4 not needed. Mostly graded dirt roads.

3N61 Jacoby Canyon is rated blue square more difficult by the USFS. It should not be a problem for a stock 4wd going downhill.

3N03 is rated green circle easiest by the USFS.

2N02 is rated green circle easiest by the USFS.

Viscera Springs Road is a graded dirt road.

Rattlesnake Canyon has deep soft sand and short small rocky sections. There are optional larger rock sections. It should not be a problem for a stock 4wd going downhill. Rattlesnake Canyon is a motorized corridor through the Bighorn Wilderness. You should stay within 60' of the center of the wash.

the road to the top of Tip Top Mountain is certainly slow and go...low range recommended....in my book anyway.

Sorry I didn't clarify. I want to come up Rattlesnake Canyon. I want to travel along the base of the north side of the mountains, basically fro Highway 18 to the mouth of Rattlesnake. I want to make a big loop and end up back in Big Bear.

OK...so you want to exit Jacoby and head towards Lucerne Valley on Hwy 18. Then you want to take dirt roads East to Rattlesnake Canyon.

I don't think it can be done. I think you can get as far East as Bessemer Mine Rd on dirt and then you have to go to Old Woman Springs Rd. This is all speculation though.

You're going to have to get past Old Woman Springs first then head for the foothills. There is a lot of private property up there and I don't know if you can get to Rattlesnake without going back down to 247 (I always respect posted property). After Rattlesnake you can take 3N03 to 2N02 which will drop you out at Baldwin Lake. It's a short asphalt trip from there to the start of 3N16 at the dump. You can catch Jacoby from there but you will come out on 18 near the 6,000 foot maker. I prefer 2N02 to 3N03, fewer new rattles that way. I like to take a box of crackers and carrots with me on 2N02 for the burro's. Watch for their tracks, shake the box of crackers to bring them out and feed them the carrots.
