  • Trail Discussion: Holcomb Creek Trail

So what's the story with Holcomb Creek Trail? Is it open, or will it be open soon? Is there anything we can do to get the ball rolling?

It is not open. The USFS says it will be open this summer.

Any idea when this summer? Early, late? Going to be up there Memorial Day weekend and would love to make this part of our trail run.

There is no date set and it's not even a certainty. Believe me, we'll let you all know when we know.

Talked to a ranger this morning and he stated that Holecomb will definitely remain closed this season (bummer!) as will Lower Larga. There's little hope of Snow Slide (3N13) and Butler Peak (3N13C) being opened up in the next 2 or 3 years. On the plus side 3N14 between Hanna Flats and Big Pine Flats (3N16) will be opened very soon. They don't have a set date but it should be sooner rather than later. It will be nice getting this major corridor back.

Holcomb Creek is MJR's adopted trail. We will let everyone know as we hear more.

When Critter and I were working on John Bull a couple of weeks ago the ranger (Greg) said the word had come down from above that Holcomb will NOT open this year at all based on the survey they did a few weeks ago because of all the trees.

He was very disappointed with the results after so much time (over 4000 hours is the # he mentioned) had been put into the trail by MJR.

4000 and counting, there has been 3 days members have gone up and worked it this year, and many more planned.

Yes this is correct although there's still some social runs disguised as "Adopt A Trail" runs being done (not by MJR members) as we experienced this last weekend a side form the out right illegal runners. Even though the trail is closed we (the MJR Trail Crew) need to be there as if it were open so when it opens it will be tip-top and safe conditions for all. This last winter was especially hard on the trial and without our current efforts the trail would become overgrown, eroded and probably a larger task then any of us would want to tackle. Crew members please come out and help, we're almost there with the basic tasks, brush clearing, lining water crossings and rock garden restorations.

It's an on going think you probably wouldn't understand

                      Cheers, B&T TJ

Below is a message from Greg on Holcomb Creek.
                        05/14/10

                        All OHV and Adopt-a-Trail Volunteers:

As you know, Summer is fast approaching. With Summer comes additional people accessing the National Forest. Soon 3N14 from Fawnskin to Big Pine Flats will be reopened to motorized vehicles.

This will provide better access for motor homes and other vehicles heading out into this area.

Due to a high number of standing burned trees (hazards) adjacent to Holcomb Creek Road (3N93) and Lower Larga Flat Road (2N06X) , they will remain closed this Summer.

I will update you when more information is available.

                        Thank you for your patience,

                        Greg.
