  • Trail Report: Calico Mt area Mines

[COLOR="Blue"]I got one more mine in before Ryan goes back to school. Since Mitch is sensitive about his mines in the high desert - LOL - we went to check out one in the Calico area, then headed up past the Silver Belle mine, then through the Rodman Mts to Camp Rock Road.

The Alvord mine was quite extensive and has a lot to explore in there. The Silver mines were mainly shafts going straight down, but had some good structures on site.

[COLOR="Blue"]Mitch would know the silver mine history, I'll check the details on the Alvord mine.

            Mike,

I've wanted to get out to the Alvord Mine for a while now. I had heard that the BLM destroyed some of the entrances, so I'm happy to see that you can go inside still. Awesome pictures as always. Did you crawl into the tunnel at the Silver Bell Mine? It goes to the verticle shaft that you saw on top and then another 500 feet beyond. Good stuff!

[COLOR="Blue"]Yes we did CRAWL through that mine entrance. The one at the Silver Cliff went straight down and looked VERY deep. We didn't spend much time there looking for any tunnels.

The Alvord was easily accessed in the lower and upper tunnel. The inside is all white crystal - limestone or quartz I think. We also found a passage that took you up through the top of the mountain - it's in a couple of the pictures. This is a very nice mine to explore. Easy 2wd all the way to it.

Gold at Alvord was discovered in 1885 and worked till 1952. The host rock is slightly metamorphosed limestone. USGS Bulletin 1089-A

I'll try to scan the photo of the Alvord mine from the USGS Bulletin and get it posted.
