I have not been on that part of the East Mojave in a few years, was going to do a trip out there this Decemember but things did not work out. So heading to Joshua Tree instead. The mine that you saw near I-15 is the Molycorp Rare Earth mine. They mine the materials that make TV/LCD. It was bought by Chevron some years ago. The Goffs School House is owned by the Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association http://www.mdhca.org I have been doing stuff for them since 1990. I need to go out there more soon.
The Kokoweef mining camp pictured is still active. The road does go past the camp but has keep out, no tresspassing signs on it.

It looked like the only active mining in the area.

If it is the mining opperation to the north of the freeway that one is in full opperation right now. It looks like a small city.

I'll post part 3 of the Mojave exploring soon - the Tecopa/Dumont area north of Baker.
